Coach Bill Glassford's
unofficially opened the 1949 schedule Saturday by rambling
over the Freshmen, 40-0.
Just one week before the initial regularly scheduled
game with South Dakota, Glassford used every available
varsity player in a full dress
game at Memorial Stadium.
The game was marred by
fumbles and penalties. The frosh
fumbled four times and the var
sity twice. The penalty total was
l"high with the varsity being
! penalized 10 times for a total of
70 yards and the frosh five times
! for 41 yards.
transfer was the whole show for
the red shirted varsity. Nagle
attempted 12 passes and com
pleted nine of them. Three of
the passes netted touchdowns.
Nagle's ball handling was the es
sence of deception and his choice
of plays good.
The Husker running attack,
which functioned in spurts, was
led by Rocky Mueller, senior
Omaha halfback, and stock Nick
Adduci, Chicago fullback. Muel
lers end sweeps, and Adduci's line
bucking were the only problems
Ihp tmiirh anH hpavv frosh line
had to cope with.
The yearling line outweighed
the varsity front men almost 10
; pounds per man. The backfields
were about on a par in weight.
The first varsity scoring came
Harry Meginnis, ace sprinter from
Lincoln, took a Bobby Reynolds
punt on the varsity 35 yard line
iind raced 65 yards down the
sidelines for a touchdown. Tom
Novak cleared the last frosh de
fender from Meginnis' path with
a block that was heard all
over the stadium. Ted Britt con
verted to make the score 7-0.
Alter four plays in the second
quarter, Nick Adduci took a hand
off from Nagle and with the help
1 rambled 42 yards for the second ;
. varsity touchdown. Again the (
"educated toe of Britt added the t
' extra point. j
A freshman fumble one play ;
later Mullen kicked off was re-j
covered by Novak and Moon Mul-1
len on the frosh 16 yard line,
enabling the varsity to score
again. After a five yard offside
penalty, Mueller advanced the
ball to the 15 yard line and
stored on the next play. Britt
added the extra point to make
the scoreboard read 21-0.
The talented passing arm of
Nagle provided the next three
varsity touchdowns. Don Bloom,
Omaha scatback, was on the re
ceiving end of the first scoring
aerial. The T. D. was set up by a
punt return by Gerry Ferguson,
who caught a boot by John Sin-
lair, frosh halfback from Los An
geles, Calif., on the freshmen 45
and returned the ball to the 24.
Two Nagle to Bloom passes cov
ered the ground to the end zone.
Freshman Coach H. H. "Ike"
Hanscom issued the call for all
freshmen, not already out for
lootball and want to play, to
report Tuesday at 7 p. m. in
stead of Monday.
AH frosh interested in play
ing freshmen ball should meet
with Coach Hanscom at the
Field House Monday night.

Cornhusker football squad
This time Britt missed the con
version so the score remained
27-0.
The third and final touchdown
of the wild second stanza came
after Max Vestal recovered a
frosh fumble on the 44-yard line.
The march to the goal line was
climaxed by a pass from Nagle
to Simon. Britt missed the extra
point and at the ena of the half
the score stood at 33-0.
In the third quarter a see-saw
battle ensued with the frosh
carrying the ball to the varsity 17
yard line, the deepest penertation
made by the yearlings.
An 83-yard drive in the last
quarter, featuring Nagle's passing
and Mueller's running, netted the
last touchdown of a long after
noon. Nagle to Vestal, pass com
bination, covered the last 18 yards
for the score. Britt converted his
fourth extra point of the day for
a final score of 40-0.
Some of the bright spots in the
freshmen afternoon were Allen
Osborne, fullback irom Aberdeen,
South Dakota; Bob Reynolds,
Grand Island; Wayne Handshy,
Los Angeles, Cal.; Ray Rifenbark,
Sioux City, la.; Ed Wingender,
Omaha; and Jim Levendusky, So.
Greensburg, Pa.
Osborne was the best the frosh
running attack had to offer.
Bobby Reynolds didn't live up to
expectations offensively but his
sparkling game of defense robbed
the varsity of at least one other
touchdown. Handshy teamed with
another heavy teammate, Don
Boll to make the center of the
frosh line almost impenetrable.
A. J. Lewendowski, ticket
manager has announced that

distributed Monday, the 19th,
at 8:30 a. m. Students must
