Three of Nebraska's gridiron
foes in the 1949 campaign rank
high in national college circles.
Penn State, Minnesota and Okla
homa are expected to finish in
the top fifteen teams in the nation.
Midwestern teams are rated
higher than those in other sections
as the season openers draw near.
Michigan and Notre Dame head
the list for the third consecutive
season. Doth boast veterans at all
positions from their 1948 clubs.
The Wolverines will bank on the
passing of Ortmann and the run
ning of Teninga. while the Irish
have Emil "Red" Sitko, All
American halfback carrying the
load.
Falling behind Michigan in the
Big Ten race come the Gophers
of Minnesota and Ohio State. The
Gophers should present the big
gest obstacle, boasting a line
which should average over 220
pounds. Even second place behind
Michigan would gain a Rose Bowl
trip according to the contract be
tween the Big Ten and Pacific
Coast conferences.
In the East Army and Cornell
are the teams to fear. Army, with
a pair of sensational backs, Arnold
Galiffa and Gil Stephenson, faces
a rough schedule. The Cadets will
meet such teams as Michigan,
Penn State (a darkhorse). Har
vard and Navy. Cornell has almost
a complete squad returning and
shows possibilities of returning to
their high pre-war standing.
Across the Southlands a pair of
one-man gangs lead the way.
Southern Methodist and North
asked to bring money for sweaters
which will be sold at the meeting.
Pepsters to Wear Sweaters
Men pepsters will wear red
sweaters with white emblems;
girls will wear white sweaters
with red emblems.
The new cheering section will
also meet at the stadium Friday,
Sept. 23, at 5 p. m. for dress re
hearsal. The section will be set up
at that time for the South Dakota
game the following day. Yells and
songs will be rehearsed, and card
drills will be explained.
Plans are being made for a pre
game rally to be held Friday
night.
Membership in the pep group
has no connection with later
membership in Tassels or Cobs.
Pepsters may belong to these or
ganizations, but they are not as
sured of pledgeship.

Carolina should retain their con
ference laurels easily. Both have
their attacks built around one
man. SMU sports triple-threat-er
Doak Walker, and the Tarheels
Charlie "Choo-Choo" Justice.
Oklahoma, rated in the top
three nationally by many experts,
should stand head and shoulders
above the field in the Midlands.
The Sooners only great loss was
Quarterback Jack Mitchell from
last season's Bitf Seven cham
pions. The Pacific Coast's representa
tive in the bowl game at Pasa
dena should be Southern Califor
nia, although California, strong
without Jensen, and Stanford may
surprise.
Wilkinson Wails;
Mitchell Missing
Coach Bud Wilkinson of the
Oklahoma Sooners is putting all
his new' quarterback prospects
into action these days as he vain
ly searches for a successor to Jack
Mitchell, last season's All-American
quarterback.
Mitchell led Wilkinson's men to
Big Seven and Sugar Bowl cham
pions. Under his direction the
Sooners averaged 297.4 net yards
rushing per game. This total
ranked fifth in the nation.
Last year Mitchell was re
garded as the most dangerous
punt runbackers as well as one
of the greatest rusher from the
T-formation in the nation. Mitch
ell led the Big Seven in rushing
in 1947 when he netted 1,455
yards.
Claude Arnold, Darrell Royal,
Frank Silva, Bob Ewbank, and
Joe Cunningham have been tak
ing daily turns running the
Sooner split T-formation.
Arnold and Royal are the best
forward passers. Royal is the
probable nominee for the starting
quarterback slot when the Soon
ers journey to Boston College for
their initial game of the 1949
season.
Buddy Burris, All-American
guard, Homer Paine, left tackle,
Truman Wright, right tackle, Pete
Tillman, hard blocking center,
and Myrle Greathouse, ace back
field blocker are all missing after
graduation.
