PAGE 4 THE DAILY NEBRASKAN . Tuesday, October 26, 1948 Navy to Operate 'Little Annapolis At mNU; 92 Enrolled in Program Nebraska's Navy is no longer joke. The state now has a "Little Annapolis" operating within the frame work of its University Ninety-two young men are work ing on a four year course which, when finished, will give them col lege degrees plus commissions in the United States Navy. Upon graduation they will have precisely the same standing as young officers who graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy at An napolis. In short, they will be trained for and launched upon a navy career. Most fo the young men in Ne braska's "Little Annapolis" are Nebraska boys. All of them are winners of awards, amounting to U.S. Navy scholarships, worth about $4,500 each. Competitive Exams Conducted Selected by the Navy from com petitive examinations conducted in the nation's high schools, these future naval officers re ceive tuition, fees, textbooks, uni forms, a living allowance of about $600 per year for four years, all that and draft exemption, too. They differ from Annapolis ca dets in these principal respects: First, they attend Nebraska University, not the Academy. Second, they carry the title of Midshipmen, U. S. Naval Reserve, instead of Midshipmen, U.S. Navy, during their four years of under graduate training. Third, they have the advant age of being able to obtain a college degree of their choice in addition to their specialized navy training. Annapolis men are grad uated with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering only. The "Little Annapolis" that the Navy has created at Nebraska is one of 52 centers now func tioning. It expects and demands something in return. Midshipmen Take Cruises All Midshipmen, USNR, must agree to spend three summers in specialized naval training during their four years of undergradu ate work. At graduation, midshipmen be come ensigns in the Navy or sec ond lieutenants in the Marine corps. Either way, they must serve on active duty for two years. At the end of that duty, they may apply for retention in the service as career men, or accept reserve commissions for a mini mum of six years. Midshipmen, USNR, are re quired to include 24 semester hours of naval science in their four years of college work. This means that they receive the fun damental naval training that An napolis provides. Instructors are regular Navy officers. In addition to its program for midshipmen, the Navy also offers training at Nebraska to another group which it refers to as "Con tract students." Nebraska h a s 40 such students. The midshipmen, products of highly competitive examinations and further screening by Navy boards of review, are sworn into the service when they begin their training. The "Contract Students" are selected from among civilian students who apply to the profes sor of Naval Science. The profes sor at Nebraska is Capt. William L. Messmer, an Annapolis man, lately. of World War II. "Contract Students" receive no scholarships but receive a sub sistence allowance of $1.05 a day during the junior and senior years of their training. Upon gradua tion, they agree to accept com missions in the U.S. Naval or Marine Corps Reserve. They also spend one summer on a short cruise. Right now, on the eve of Navy day, Oct. 27, the Navy is making preparations to begin its search for next year's scholarship stu dents the Midshipmen, USNR. Applicants must be between 17 and 21 years of age and qualified for admission to college. Nebraska's Navy scholarship quota this year is 30. Dean Green Talks To Ag Engineers "The Opportunities in the Field of Agricultural Engineering" was the topic of a talk given by Roy M. Green, dean of the College of Engineering, at the Oct. 20 meeting of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers. At this meeting, Bill Splinter and Les Jochens were elected co chairmen of Engineering Week activities. The next meeting of A.S.A.E. will be held Nov. 2 in Room 206, Agricultural Engineering. Arthur Dobson, who has just re turned from Greece, will speak at this meeting. His topic will be "Reconstruction in Greece."
