CHAMPIONSHIP CORNHUSKERS Members of the 1948 University of Nebraska baseball team ad
mire the trophy emblematic of the Big Seven championship won by the Huskers this spring. It was the
first diamond championship in 19 years for the Nebraska team as Coach Tony Sharpe made his debut
by winning 16 of 21 games, capped by a 10-game streak at the end of the season. Front row, left to
right: Manager Clyde Luther, Don Hays, Wes Maser, Dil Blatchford, Elroy Gloystein, Coach Tony
Sharpe (with trophy), Hobe Hays, Angelo Ossino, Jim Sandstedt, and Assistant Coach Vern Kailey.
Back row, left to right: Bob Cerv, Bill Denker, Orville Schmieding, Bob Grogan, Bob Schleiger, Har
lan Powley, Bob Bull, Tom Novak, Jim Sharp, Jack Helmsing, Fritz Hegwood, Bob Hinde and Bob
Camp. All of these players will return next spring with the exception of Maser and Schmieding. One of
Potsy Clark's top ball carriers this fall will be Frank "Junior" Collopy (lower right), 5 foot 11 inch,
190-pounder from Scottsbluff. Junior is one of two men on this year's squad who have lettered three
years in football. He lettered in 1944 and after a naval hitch returned to letter in 1946 and again last
year. He was an All-State selection while playing for Scottsbluff high. (Upper right) Tom Novak, Uni
versity of Nebraska center, is being boomed for Ail-American honors. An All-Big Six selection the past
two falls, Novak was put on Bill Stern's pre-season squad behind Chuck Bednarik of Pcnn and Alex
Sarkesian of Northwestern. Last year Notre Dame tabbed him as their outstanding opposing lineman.
