Buskers Open Grid Season September 25
"We looked good playing against
ourselves. How good we will look
against other teams is a question
no one can answer until we play
Iowa State in the opening game
September 25."
That is the way George "Potsy"
Clark, football coach and athletic
director, views the immediate fu
ture of Nebraska football.
Coach Clark came back to Ne
braska on March 1, 1948, and suc
ceeded in organizing one of the
largest and most successful spring
drills the Cornhuskers have ever
held.
Not "Too Optimistic."
His many trips into the state as
a dinner speaker and to visit with
athletes also will pay future di
vidends. But for the 1948 season,
Potsy hopes Nebraska followers
will not become "too optimistic."
He believes the Cornhuskers
can put over some surprises but
his guard and tackle replacements
fac!e rapidly after the first string.
The Cornhuskers will return to
the single wing this autumn. Potsy
also plans to throw some spread
phiys into the various areas.
Tnere will be 18 lettermen from
1947 and eleven lettermen from
previous years, mostly during the
war, returning in the group which
reports September 1 for two weeks
of the early drills.
Ten Veterans Lost.
Ten of the 1947 veterans were
lost by graduation or a decision
not to continue in school.
Coach Clark will have as his
varsity assistants Jack Johnson,
Dou;ial Russell, Tony Blazine, Ray
Pio-jliaska and Neal Mehring. Rus
sell, Blazine, and Prochaska were
aid os in 1947. Johnson was here in
1945 when Potsy guided one of
Nebraska's war-time teams. Jack
was an All-America tackle at the
University of Utah, later twice
All-National Professional Foot
ball league tackle when he played
for the Detroit Lions which Potsy
was directing. Mehring is a Ne
braska, graduate and played
under D. X. Bible during the sea
sons of 1932-33-34.
Coach Clark is an advocate of
team, rather than individual play.
After 30 years as a coach in both
college and. professional circles, he
is convinced that a football team
moves largely on spirit.

RETURNS TO IIUSKERLAND After two years of private life
George "Potsy" Clark has returned to the coaching ranks and the
University of Nebraska as head coach and athletic director. Clark's
1945 Cornhuskers won their last four games after losing the first
five. It was the steady improvement of the Scarlet and Cream as
the season went along which impressed Nebraska fans. That 1945
record was the best since pre-war days. '
Eastern Trip Being
Planned for Cagers
An eastern trip next December,
climaxed by an appearance in
Madison Square Garden against
Long Island University, is being
planned for the University of Ne
braska basketball team, Coach
Harry Good has announced.
The Cornhuskers will probably
play Purdue, Temple and LaSalle
enroute. Last year's big trip took
the Scarlet to the west coast.
Potsy May Add

(Potsy) Clark, athletic director
and football coach, announced.

now have sufficient for any one
season," Coach Clark said, "wow
ever, if the right team is found
we may be playing another ten
