The veterans administration has
cautioned World War II veterans
planning to train under the GI bill
that a new federal law prohibits
the VA from paying the costs of
any courses which are determined
to be avocational or recreational
in nature.
The recently enacted l;iw ap
plied to educational and training
courses commenced or re-commenced
by veterans after June 30,
according to Ashley Westmore
land, Lincoln VA regional office
manager. Veterans who com
n diced or re-commenced training
prior to July 1 in courses affected
by the new law will be permitted
to complete their training.
List Doubtful Courses.
Certain courses in dancing, pho
tography, glider training, per
sonality development, entertain-
lcnt, instrumental and vocal
iusi:, public spcaKing, spoils ana
atHotics, and any single subject
couise which is not a part of a
general program leading to an
edu ational or employment objec
tive, are included in the list of
t v.i i ling determined by the VA to
b" :r o'.'ational or recreational in
cl' ."cler.
If a veteran wants training in
any of the courses considered by
VA to be avocational or recrea
tional he must submit to the VA
con-mlete -justification that the
course he wants is in connection
with his nresent or contemplated
business or occupation, and prior
approval of the VA must De od
tained. Flight Training Okayed.
The new law stipulates that
flight training and related aviation
courses a veteran may xaxe n
connection with his present o
contemplated business or occupa
tion shall not be considered avo
cational or recreational.
Flight courses elected by a vet
annroved school wil
not be considered avocational or
recreational if the veteran sub
mits evidence prior to the start of
training that the course is occupa
tional connected, and that he is
physically qualified to obtain me
type of license which will enable
him to attain his employment ob
jective. These Studies Approved.
Courses not Generally consid
ered by VA to be avocational or
recreational include approved in
stitutional on-farm training and
apprenticeships training; courses
of education in approved schools
I for which credit is grained toward
!an educational objective; courses
!of vocational training in approved
schools, approved courses in on-Ithe-job
training and courses in
applied music, physical education
and public speaking offered by in
stitutions of higher learning as an
