Neal Mehring Named New
Assistant Coach at NU
New assistant coach at the Uni
versity is Neal Mehring, it was
announced by Acting Athletic Di
rector George "Pots' Clark.
Mehring resigned as head coach
at Adams State college of Ala
mosa, Colo., to accept the Ne
braska post. Graduated from Ne
braska in 1936, he played football
for the Cornhuskers in 1932, '33,
"35.
Coached at Lincoln.
He coached at Lincoln high in
1936, at Salida, Colo., high school
from 1937 to 1944 and moved to
LaJunta, Colo., high school in
1945.

Three varsity swimmers from
last year's squad teamed up with
six Lincoln High graduates Fri
day and the group travelled to
Techumseh where they put on
a swimming, diving, and water
safety demonstration.
Accompanied by Hollie Lepley
of the Phys Ed office, and Jack
Donovan of the Athletic Publicity
office, the group played to a full
house at the Tecumseh pool. Al
Donovan, formerly a NU gym
nast, and Vernon Kailey, baseball
letterman here in 46, are in charge
of the summer program at Tecum
seh. Kailey was recently hired as
the new head coach there.
The swimmers were Marvin
Grimm, who placed first in the
50 and 100 yard conference com
petition tiiis year; Fig Flagg, who
took second in diving ar.d Jack
Campbell, free style 'artist. The
Lincoln High . boys are all pros
pective enrollees at the university
this fall.
University Student
Dies Last Week
A University of Nebraska stu
dent died last Wednesday morn
ing. He was Clair Gillaspie, 21,
2936 N. 45th, Lincoln.
A member of the Nebraska na
tional guard, he served two years
in the second Armored division in
the south Pacific during World
War II.
' Survivors include his wife, Vir
ginia; parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Thomas A. Lincoln; three sisters,
Mrs. O. T. Powell and Mrs. John
Kirby, both of Lincoln, and Mrs.
Kenneth Long, Minneapolis; and
two brothers, Clark Wayne and
Thomas A. jr., both of Lincoln.

Mehring reinstated a program of
inter-collegiate athletics at Adams
State College.

His football team won the New
Mexico conference football cham
pionship in 1946 and was run
nerup to Highland university in
the basketball race. In 1947,
Adams State finished second in
football.
"We are mighty happy that
Neal Mehring decided to return
to his alma mater," Clark said.
"His record as a coach indicates
he is definitely one of the younger
men destined for greater things."
NAACP Meet
Set Tuesday
The University branch of the
National Association for the Ad
vancement of Colored People will
highlight its summer activities at
a meeting to be held Tuesday,
July 20, in the Union.
Rev. Robert L. Moody, presi
dent of the city branch of the
NAACP, and a recent delegate to
the national convention of the or
ganization, will report on the
activities of the convention at
Kansas City.
Roland Luedtke, law student,
will outline the provisions of a
"model" F.E.P.C. bill which has
been prepared at the University
of Nebraska Law School. John
O'Hare will tell of the activities
of the NAACP nationally.
As a special feature, Don Mor
row, a delegate to the recent
Democratic National Convention,
will report on the civil rights
plank which was adopted at that
convention.
The meeting is open to the
public, and members of the city
branch will be guests of the uni
versity group. President John
White will preside, beginning the
meeting at 7:15.

dents and faculty members en
gaged in a game of hide and seek
among Bethany's sand greens Fri
day, Bill McCarthy emerged low
man with a 76 for eighteen holes.
Hank Knapp was runnerup with
a 78.
The two men exchanged places
for low nine hole honors. Knapp
carding a 37 and McCarty a 38.
Hollie Lepley of the Phys Ed of
fice was in charge of the tourna
ment sponsored by the Intramural
department.
Others who braved the hot July
sun to finish well up the list in
clude Stan Diller, 83, E. W. Moore,
88 and Arnold Finhalier with 90.
On nine holes, D. L. Rogers posted
a 41, and J. H. Miller and Minoru
Sewake clubbed out 43.
All in all, though, it was Lam
bert Burmesler who got the most
exericse. He fire a 58 out and a
57 in for a grand total of 115 and
the day's high score.

At Pioneer Friday
Keeping up the pace of a "Tour
nament a week" during summer
session, Hollie Lepley has an
nounced a University Men's
Tournament on the Pioneer course
for Friday, July 23.
Students and faculty members
are invited to participate in the
tournament, which will com
mence at 2:00 p.m. All those who
desire to enter the competition
should notify Mr. Grossman at
the Physical Education office, ex
tension 3180 at the university.
Entrants may make up their
own foursomes if th.?y so desire,
or they will be placed in a four
some at the first tee, according to
Lepley. Playing fee for the Pio
neer course will be 50c, and clubs
may be rented at the Golf Shop
there.

Morrison's acceptance has been
received, and he plans to discuss
the record of the 80th Congress,
Curtis has informed AVC that
it is against his policy to appear
on the same platform with his op
ponent, and that he is therefore
unable to be present.
Brooke Westover, chairman of
the Lincoln chapter of AVC, has
been asked to preside, beginning
the meeting at 7:15. There will be
opportunity for questions at the
end of Mr. Morrison's talk.
