Nebraska Cops Second
Game of Buff Series, 6-1
Nebraska continued its drive for the Big Seven base
ball title by defeating the Colorado Buffaloes 6-1 Tuesday
behind the five hit pitching of Big Jim Sandstedt. The
Huskers' conference record now stands at nine wins and
three defeats. The Scarlet got off to an early lead with a
two run outburst in the first frame,
Catcher Dil Blatchford walked and
Hobe Hays was hit by an inside
pitch. After two were retired on
ground balls, Wes Maser was safe
at first when the Buff catcher
mfssed the third strike, Blatchford
scoring from third on the rlay.
Hays Scores.
Bob Cerv then walked, loading
the sacks. Hays scored as Colorado
tried to force a runner at second
on Bob Schleiger's grounder.
Colorado came right back to
score once on a single, stolen
base and an error.
The contest then settled down
into a pitchers' battle until the
bottom of the sixth.
With two away, Bill Denker
shot a single past second base,
and all hands were safe when
Colorado attempted a force play
at second on Grogan's grounder.
Denker and Grogan advanced
when hte pitcher threw into
center field trying to catch
Denker off second. Maser then
walked to load the sacks.
Denker added the third tally
when the pitcher threw into
second walk. Schleiger struck out
to end the rally, with Nebraska
leading, 3-1.
Another Scarlet tally was added
in the seventh. Two were out
again when , Blatchford was safe
on an error ; py the second base
man. Hays then drove a long
double to the left center fence
to score the catcher. Denker fol
lowed with a j walk, but Grogan
ended the inning by hitting into
a force play; at second.
The Huskers ended the scor
ing in the last, of the eighth. Maser
walked but was forced at second
by Cerv, w,ho promptly took
second on an error by the first
baseman and stole third. Cerv
scored and Schleiger was safe at
first on a hard grounder to the
shortstop.
Harlan Powlev. substituting for
Jim Sharp, slashed a single into
right. Schleiger scored on an
overthrow at third, Powley tak
ing second. Sandstedt bounced
one to Pitcher Pete Click, who
threw Powley out at the plate,
and Blatchford flied to right to
end the rally.
Sandstedt retired the Buffs
easily in the top of the ninth and
the ball game was over.
Colorado's Bill Fanning was a
thorn in the side of the Huskers
all through the series. The cocky
infielder got two hits in both
games and was an audacious
base-runner, stealing home in
Mortday's contest.
Nebraska has two conference
series left on their slate. They
travel to Lawrence to play K.U.
twice this weekend and finish
the season May 24-25 against
Iowa State here.
