Wednesday, April 21, 1948 UN Athletes Win Honors Tuesday John Sedlacek, right guard on the University of Nebraska foot ball team, won two scholastic awards it was revealed at the honors convocation, Tuesday. He was named on the sopho more honor list in the engineer ing college and also won the Jones National Bank Scholarship. Ray Lucht, freshman basket ball player from Grand Island, won a place on the freshman honor list as did Lawrence Done gan, Lincoln, freshman football player. Loyal Hurlbert, 440-yard indoor champion of the Big Seven Con ference and Russell Hale, middle distance runner from Hardy, were named on the sophomore honor list along with Kenneth Elson, North Platte, who played basket sdr' ball for Nebraska before the war. Frederick Ware, jr., a track man in 1945, was on the junior honor list and Robert Scoville, Hartington, was named to the senior honor list. Dean Kratz, Lincoln, former track man, won a place among the Allen Competition Scholars in law and Robert McNutt, Lincoln, won a Law Review award. jS1-"- M ' ' r- - v-'V.--? rrM . JOE MrGILL, 19-year-old spring football candidate, is one of the top contenders for the center position on Nebraska's 1948 squad. E. Means announced Tuesday that the 1948 outdoor track relays will be held May 3 and 4 in Mcmoi ial aladium. Any individual or croup in the University may enter the meet ex cept varsity track men. former letter men and any other varsity golf and tennis team members. Two trophies will be awarded, one to the winning fraterity team and one to the outstanding ath lete of the meet. If an independent team wins the title, all participat ing members who score will re ceive official Intramural medals. Certificates will be awarded to all record breakers. No man may compete in more than four events. Organizations are responsible for the eligibility of their men. Each organization must have five men participating to get participation points. No track shoes may be worn. Last year 395 men competed in the track meet. The top honors last year were taken by Field House, an independent group. The fraternity champions were the DU's, followed by Sigma Nu and Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Jack Barker, Sigma Nu, was the individual champion. at the Ag Student Union dance to be held Friday, April 23, from 9 to 12 p. in. Bobby Mills and his band will be featured at the Ag Union dance, with tickets at $1.50 per couple. There will be a floor show dur ing intermissions. Tickets can be bought at the Union office. Reservations must be made in the coaches' office before Monday at 5 p.m. Red Cross Plans Change A 20-hour American Red Cross life saving and water safety course will be conducted in the Coliseum pool starting Wednesday. April 21 at 4 p. m., Coach Hollio Lepley announced. A previous announcement stated that the water courses would start April 26. Classes will be from 4:00 to &00 Monday through Fri day. The courses will be conducted by Marvin Hersey of York who is an American Red Cross field representative in the aquatic sec tion. Hersey will be assisted by Webb Elmory and Coach Lepley. All men who hope to act as life guards or plan to do leaching this summer are urged to attend the sessions of the Red Cross course. Intramural Golf Slated For April 25 Nebraska University's Intra mural spring golf championships will get under way Sunday, April 25 with tee off time between 8:30 a. m. and 1:30 p. m. on the Pi oneer golf course. Eighteen holes of medal play will be required on April 25. The best 32 scorers will be paired and match play will continue to se lect the team and individual champions. Coach Hollic Lepley will make all April 25 pairings, and all contestants must report to him at the Pioneer club house. No more than two from any organ ization may play in the same four some. All matches will be nine holes with the finals over the 18 hole route. Awards Given. A trophy will be awarded to the winning fraternity, and the individual champion will receive an official Intramural medal. The gold tournament is a Jack Best event. Champions names will be emblazoned on the Coliseum lobby pi acq ues. Any man in the university is eligible except members of the varsity golf squad.
