Think Twice
Before Making
That High Dive
So you think that 20-foot dive
you made when you were a
youngster was high. Take note
of the world's highest dive.
Alex Wickham dove from a
cliff 205 feet 9 inches high in
1918 in Melbourne, Australia, and
lived. Bookmakers offered 10-1
that he would not survive.
Wickham made the dive with
out knowing the height of the
cliff and lost consciousness about
half way down. But he entered
the water in a perfect dive. His
bathing suit was ripped off when
he hit the water, and his body
was black and blue for months.
So when you feel like making a
high dive, think it over first.
Varsity Swimming Squad
To Be Bolstered By Frosh
Nebraska's swimming team will be bolstered next year by
one of the strongest freshman squads in the past few years.
Every event will be stronger by the addition of the fresh
man swimmers.
Leading the field are two Omaha boys, Ted Kanamine
and Eddie Craren.
Kanamine comes from Omaha
Tech, where he was for two years
the champion in the 50-yard and
100-yard freestyle events. Since
coming to Nebraska, Ted has im
proved steadily and has boon
pushing Marvin Grimm, ace Corn
huskcr sprinter, in every time
trial. Kanamine should strength
en the sprint events considerably.
Top Frosh Diver
Eddie Craren could be called
the most versatile of the fresh
man swimmers. In high school,
besides being state diving cham
pion as a junior, he was state
trampoline champion and runner
up in his weight in wrestling as a
senior. Eddie hails from Omaha
South. As a senior he swam with
the Omaha Legion club and took
the diving event in several dual
meets. Last summer, Craren won
the state and midwestern A.A.U.
3-meter diving evftit, nosing out
Roger Moore, Nebraska's top var
sity diver. Eddie recently added
another trophy to his string when
he won first place cup in diving
in the Midwestern Indoor Cham
pionships. Three other boys complete the
freestylers. Tom Harley, George
Hill, and Wally Gass.
Tom lettered two years as a
placed second to Kanamine in
all their meetings.
One Distance Man
George Hill is the only dis
tance man on the freshman squad.
He swims both the 220-yard and
440-yard freestyle events. "Doc"
swam with the Omaha Legion
club as a senior in high school. Ho
is also from Omaha South.
Wally Gass hails from Seward
and is also gunning for a spot in
the sprint events.
George Boomer is the only
backstroker on the team. George
swam two years at Lincoln high,
one year freestyle, and will fill
a gap in the varsity backstroke
lineup next winter.
Bill Greer and Bob Phelps are
taking care of the breaststroke
event. Both of these boys swam
two years at Lincoln high and last
year helped their team win its
first state title since before the
war.
Greer Cops State Title
Greer won the state 100-yard
breaststroke event and placed
third in the 50-yard freestyle
event. Phelps was second to
Greer in the breaststroke event
and swam on the winning medley
relay team. These boys should
strengthen the breaststroke posi
tion next year.
Nebraska's swimming prospects
for next season look bright. And
with the addition of some of this
year's high school stars, Nebras
ka should possess a strong team
in future years.
Longest Beard 1 1
Who will have the longest beard
at the Farmer's Fair?
Ag College will soon take on
all appearances of the "days of
Dan McGrew" as Ag men's beards
begin to show around the edges.
The new growths, being grown
for the Farmer's Fair, will pay
off when the prizes are awarded
at the Fair for the longest and
best attempt.
The big prize?
A royal kiss from the Goddess
of Agriculture, of course! Who
could ask for more?
Cooper Plans
Title Defense
In Drake Meet
Ten full or part shareholders in
seven titles will defend their
Drake Relay championships in
Des Moines April 23-24.
Nebraska's Don Cooper, who
tied for first in last year's relays,
will be one of the favorites in
the pole vault. Cooper has been
unable to compete during the past
few weeks because of a sprained
ankle. But if his ankle contin
ues to improve, he should be
ready to defend his title. Cooper
shared the crown with Bob Low
ther of Louisiana State and Tom
Bennett of Wisconsin last year at
13 feet 6 inches.
Grote Missing
Missing from this year's relays
will be Nebraska's Herb Grote,
the 1947 javelin king. Grote was
graduated last year.
Three other Big Seven track
men will return to defend titles.
Dick Ault of Missouri captured
the 440-yard hurdles crown last
year and will be back again this
year. Another Tiger, Mel Shee
han, will try to repeat as the top
discus thrower. And Tom Sco
field of Kansas will return in the
high jump.
