Tigers Take Loop Lead
Defeat Huskers, 47-41
The University of Missouri
jumped into the Big Seven con
ference lead Saturday night as the
Tigers defeated Nebraska's Corn
huskers at Columbia, 47-41. Okla
homa assisted the Tigers to the
top of the ' circuit standings by
conquering Kansas State.
It was the tenacious guarding
on the part of Karl Pierpoint plus
the scoring ability of Don McMil
len that sent the Tigers ahead to
stay in the last half. The Huskers
made a game of it through the
opening stanza, although the Ti
ter advantage at one time grew to
five points. Nebraska rallied
toward the close of the period to
tie the score at 24-all.-Thornton
Jenkins two-pointer gave the Ti
gers a 26-24 advantage at the in
termission. .
Nebraska got but two buckets
from the field during 19 mm
t y,a efrnnd period, and
kept the game from being a rout
by countering ior seven
in that final 60 seconds.
Pierpoint held Claude Rether
ford, Husker scoring ace, score
less from the field. Rod Cox
however, took over the scoring
burden and contributed 13 points
to the Nebraska attack. McMil
len's total of 15 gave him indi
vidual scoring honors.
Missouri hit 15 of 41 shots for
a .366 percentage while the Husk
ers, their fast break failing to
net necessary points, tried 57
shots and connected with but 14,
a .246 average.

Kansas Drops
Third Loop Tilt
Iowa State stalled through the
last three minutes of the game
Friday night to upset Kansas
University at Ames, 52-50. The
loss marked the Jayhawks third
in a disastrous week of conference
play.
Otto Schnellbacher paced the
Jayhawks s they led through
most of the first half. But before
the rest period, the Cyclones
staged a rally and left the floor
with a 24-21 lead.
The Iowa State cagers were
never headed during the second
half.
Kansas Drops Three
Iowa State's victory gave the
Cyclones a 4-3 record in con
ference play and left Kansas with
a 3-3 mark. Before last Satur
day's game with the Nebraska
Cornhuskers, Kansas had pos
sessed a perfect 3-0 record. Mis
souri also took measure of the

NU Trackmen
As Marks Fall
Missouri University's track team
lived up to all advance notices
Saturday afternoon under the east
stadium as it downed the Ne
braska thinclads by a score of
62 to 40's. Seven marks were
oroken and one was tied during
the record-smashing afternoon.
Nebraska started the record
breaking procession when little
Dick Hutton tied the record in
the 60-yard dasli by running that
event in a time of :6.2. Missouri
came right back and a set a new
record in the- 440-yard dash as
Robert Schuster sprinted over the
quarter-mile route in :50.4. Bud
Gartiser of Missouri set a new
mark in the next event, winning
the 60-yard high hurdles in :07.4.
Gartiser also won the 60-yard low
hurdles in a time of :07, which
was only one-tenth of a second
over the record.
Field Records Fall.
Three of the four field records
were topped during the course
of the meet. Jim Howard of Mis
souri leaped to a record in the
high jump when he skimmed over
a height of 6 feet, 3 ',6 inches. At
the same time, his teammate, Ed
Quirk, tossed the shot a distance
of 51 feet, 10 inches, breaking
the old record by 3,i of an inch.
The high point of the meet
was the pole vault. Don Cooper
of Nebraska won that event with
a vault of 14 feet 2'fc inches. This
heiglit. breaks the meet record,
which was 13 feet 9T inches, set
by Cooper last year. The vault
also betters the Big Six indoor
record of 13 feet lO1 inches, set
by Harold Hunt of Nebraska.
Lancaster Bests Martin
The best track performance was
turned in by two half-milers, Jim
Martin of Nebraska and Lancas
ter of Missouri. Lancaster won
the event, edging out Martin in
the stretch. The Tiger distance
man's time was 1:58.2, which tops
the old record of 1:59.4, held by
Rayl of Missouri. In taking sec
ond, Martin also broke the old
record when he was unofficially
timed in 1:58.6.
The last record breaking per
formance of the day came in the
mile relay. Missouri's relay four
some, composed of Phillips, Schus
ter, Schmidt, and Klein, broke the
old record by five seconds when
they covered the distance in a
time of 3:52.
