PAGE 4 THE DAILY NEBRASKAN Sunday, February 8, 1 943 E NIMBLE SPANIEL by Sam Warren xX Chesterfield is my cigarette-it's Mild and pleasing' With a detailed report of the All-University Fund results now before the student body, a hat-full of congratulations are in order for Beth Noerenberg and her entire AUF staff for the largest Corn- husker contribution to local and world-wide charities. Over $6,000 was raised for World Student Service Fund, cam pus YM and YWCA's, and local Community Chest charities. This figure, donated by 10,000 stu dents, represents more than twice the amount raised last year when a student body of approximately 8,000 gave $2,500. To the W.S.S.F. went $4,743.85 of the total, crediting: an average of 47 cents per student for their for eig-n cousins-in-study. An inter esting contrast is the fact that 830 students at Nebraska Wesleyan University, in another part of Lincoln, save a total of $1,062.86, or an average of $1.50 per student. The UN goal was $2 per student. Interesting? When the University Choral Union presented Handel's oratorio "The Messiah" last December, a feature-staff reporter consumed a number of hours in an effort to determine the number of the an nual presentation, bothering mu sic faculty instructors and college librarians for estimates, no offi cial count being on record, strangely enough. With the aid of music theory Prof. Elizabeth Tier ney, we determined that the an nual productions began sometime before 1927 when Carrie Belle Raymond became director of what was then the music conservatory, although it was general opinion that she had directed the oratorio ever since becoming a faculty member. We settled for phrases like "the early 1900's" and "more than 40 year performance history." The University Public Relations of fice, the Lincoln Star and the Nebraska Alumnus magazine suc cessively twisted the figure and stated that the Dec. 14th produc tion was the "40th annual presen tation." (Let's read "The Rag" more carefully, huh?). Now the truth is known, thanks to efforts of archive librarian Clara L. Craig. After sorting thru old programs, tearsheets and various clippings. Miss Craig tin covered a 1923 Kiwanis Club ci tation booklet when Mrs. Ray mond was awarded the club's distinguished service medal. The booklet cites for all time that "every Christmas since 1895" the oratorio has been sung "by a great student chorus." Mendels sohn's oratorio "The Elijah" was substituted one Christmas by Prof. Howard Kirkpatrich, one of ine lour to direct "the Messiah" over its 56 year history which forms one of the staunchest and oldest of campus traditions.
