THE DAILY NEBRASKAN
UN Veterans
Seek to Raise
GI Allotments
Norman E. Walker, the Nebras
ka representative of the Univer
sity Veteran's Organization to the
National Conference of Veteran
Trainees in Washington, returned
to Lincoln with his report.
According to Walker, efforts
were made by the representatives
on the first day of the conference
to secure passage of the Meade
Bill (HR866), before adjournment
of the special session of Congress.
Each delegate contacted the rep
resentative of his state personally
in an effort to scene their coope
ration in the passage of this bill.
Nebraska's representatives all
declared themselves in favor of a
"reasonable increase." When the
bill was introduced, however, it
was tabled because of the "gag
rule" enforced in the last 24 hours
of a session.
Compare Figures.
When the NCVT reconvened, its
subsistance committee compared
figures as to the cost of living in
the states represented. This com
parison indicated that the Meade
bill was totally inadequate. Using
this information, the delegation
unanimously decided to support
an emended version of the bill,
calling for $100 for single veterans
in school, $125 for married stu
dents, plus $10 for each additional
dependent.
