The Allen Competition was in augurated through the efforts of Mr. Thomas Stinson Allen, Dean F. K. Beutel and the law faculty in the spring of 1945. At that time Mr. Allen, who was the first graduate of the Nebraska Law School, gave a bequest to the Law College intending that it b. used in some way to encourage the student in practice work. With this bequest the law faculty orig inated the Allen Competition, a contest between law students in brief writing and arguing cases. A Board of Student Advisors submits a set of actual facts on the records of the case which the student argues before a court made up of practicing attorneys, advanced law students, or faculty members, depending upon the status of the competition. The winners eliminate the losers and go on to further arguments. In the last year the two winners present their argument before three judges of the State Su preme Court, and the winners' names are inscribed on a perma nent bronze plaque. There are now two inscriptions on the plaque which hangs on the first floor hall. In 1946 the winners were Blaine Sloan and Jack Stewart. Last year the winner was Budd Bornhoft. Lewandowski as university athletie director heralds what may be the beginning of a new era in Corn husker sports. Meeting three times over the holidays, Nebraska's athletic board announced that Lew had resigned as director in order to devote his full attentions to the post of business manager. To replace able Mr. Lewandowski, the board announced that a "czar,", as yet unnamed, will Have control of the entire picture at Nebraska and that this director's word will be final on the composition of the coaching staff. Some of the boys in the back rooms of Omaha and Lincoln will nod wisely at this move and comment that it is a neat piece of buck passing. However, this "buck-passing" should unify the athletic set-up and make one man directly responsible for all phases of com petition. Conceivably, this czar, if his word is actually final, can clear up a muddled situation and silence the baseless criticisms of Bernie Masterson. Because of the boards silence after the original announcement, rumor has spread that Biff Jones or Dana Bible will return to the Cornhuskers as the new director. It is to be hoped that the univer sity athletic board makes some definite announcement as to their plans within the next few days before the rumors get too deep. At any rate, the athletic board is to be congratulated on taking a positive step which should go a long way toward putting Nebraska back in the win column in all sports. J. H. Siesta Hour.
