Schleigcr Sinks Winning
Basket in Final Seconds
(Special to The Iatly Nebrankan.)
KANSAS CITY. A field goal by Center Dick Schleiger
with only 40 seconds of playing time remaining boosted
Nebraska to a 46-44 first round Big Six tourney victory over
the Missouri Tigers Thursday afternoon.
Nebraska, trailing 27-18 at the half, staged a terrific
uphill rally. Guard Joe Brown sparked the Scarlet five with
12 points. The smooth ball-handler put the Huskers into
the lead for the first time with a
one-hand shot with only five min
utes remaining in the game.
Forward Claude Retherford
contributed heavily to Nebraska's
rally with ten points. Retherford's
fielder with seven minutes left
knotted th eeount.
After Coach Harry Good's five
jumped into the lead the score
was knotted three times before
Schleiger tallied. It was the lanky
pivot's only iield goal of the aft
ernoon. In other parties played at Kan
sas City, Kansas State surprised
well-regarded Oklahoma 55-48
and the Oklahoma Aggies troun
ced Iowa State 44-33.
Semifinal pairings will pit the
Huskers against the Oklahoma
Aggies, and Kansas State will
meet the winner of the Kansas
Colorado game. These games will

STELLAR NU GUARD Ef-b Cerv, Husker guard, has been battling
to hold a first team berth with Neal Mosscr. The stocky back court
star broke into Coach Harry Good's starting lineup midway in last
year's campaign and has held the spot with his scrappy defensive
play. Cerv helped the Huskers upset Missouri Thursday afternoon
in the Big Six tourney by sinking a pair of field goals and three
charity tosses.
Three Sports
Increase IM
Sports Action
The Intramural race will break
wide open after the first of the
year as competition in three
sports will be initiated before the
end of January.
Rifle team competition seems
to be the nearest on hand as a
team tourney is scheduled for the
first week in January. At the
present time and for the past
three to four weeks, teams and
individuals have been making
use of the ROTC range in the
basement of Andrews Hall for
regular practice sessions.
Water Polo Scheduled
After the rifle team competi
tion, water polo will come into
play. An indoor intramural track
meet is also on the docket for
sometime in January.
With these three activities, plus
the regular basketball play, all
intramural teams have a busy
schedule in their paths. By the
end of January, the Jack Best j
standings could be pretty well i
scrambled in comparison to what
they are now.
