PACE 4 THE DAILY NEBRASKAN Thursday, December 11, 1947 Univets Nominate Officer Candidates Nominees for second semester offices in the University veterans organization and plans for re-organization were made at the Tues day, Dec. 9 meeting, of the group. Candidates for president are John B. Rigg and Norman E. Walker; vice-president, Richard Case and W. O. McDowell; secre tary, Clara Pappas and Rose Hol ub; treasurer, Martin Burgess and Ralph Collins.' Under the new organization ' plan, one member-at-large for every fifty members will be elected to a student council seat. Nominees for this office are Ralph Handren, Roy Sodergren, Paul Hy land, Ann KuncI, Richard Hawes, Lulu Huff, Virginia Nelson, Mary Manning and Jack Ailes. Any member wishing for file for any office should do so be fore Dec. 19 at 5:00 p.m. in the Univets office, 209 Nebraska Hall. Elections will be held Jan. 8. Norman E. Dayton Smith, instructor in voice at the School of Music, tenor; Donald Ellis, a former student , at Illinois Wesleyan, baritone; Miss Jean Thompson, senior in the College of Arts and Sciences, soprano; and Mrs. Paul ine Smith Anderson, wife of A. T. Anderson, instructor in mod ern European history at the uni versity, contralto. Mr. Smith, director of the Lin coln men's chorus, is also a solo ist at the Christian Science church Mrs. Anderson is a graduate of the University of California, and former soloist in musical pre sentations in Berkeley and San Francisco, and at Trinity Meth odist church in Berkeley. Both Mr. Smith and Mrs. Anderson were soloists in last year's pre sentation of the "Messiah." Opera Lead MisS" Thompson appeared in the leading role of Santuzza in the cpera "Cavalleria Rusticanna," a university presentation in 1946. She studied one year with Rus sel Anderson of Wayne, Neb., and has been studying with Dr. West biook for the past three years. Miss Thompson was soloist for the "Messiash" in 1945. Aside from attending Illinois Wesleyan for two years, Mr. Ellis has gained much musical experience by singing for two years with the Heidelberg Oc tette, Chicago, and with Horace Heidt's orchestra for one year. He has done both solo and chorus work for one season each with the St. Louis Opero Company and the Chicago Opera Company. In ad dition, Mr. Ellis has not only made decordings, but also some movies with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Universal Pictures. He pbns to return to school to ob tain a Bachelor's degree in music. BIock-Brid!e Initiates 4 Thirty-four men were Initiated into Block and Bridle, national animal husbandry club in pro ceedings held Tuesday afternoon in the Horse Barn. New members include: Frank Anderson, Keith Arterburn, W. Neal Baxter; Maurice Bergmier, Owen Brainard, Vernon Caldwell, Thomas Chilvers, Albert Clawson, James Curtis, John Davis, John DeWulf, Bob Dill, Ralph Fagot, Dale Flowerday, Merwyn French, Don Gard, Harold Grabouski, Wayne Hagerbaumer, Don Kel logg, Don Knoeble, Stanley Lam bert, Robert Meade, Lauren Nie man, Wilbur Pauley, Don Popken, Duane Sellin, Thomas Sherman, Robert Sim, Merle Stalder, Wil lard Stowell, Norbert Freeman, Kenneth Torczon, Clifford Weg ener, and Don Jensen. After the initiation, the group adjourned to Animal Husbandry Hall for suoper and the evening Drosrram. Rick Wahlstrom, presi dent of the club introduced Prof, 'M A. Alexander who served as master of ceremonies. Professor Alexander called on various members of the faculty for short speeches which described the activities of the organization on campus. The livestock judg ing team was introduced and each man told about some phase of the contests held in Kansas City and Chicago. The Percheron Horse Trophy was formally presented to the club by members of the team. This trophy is presented by the breed ers of Percheron horses to the team which was in the judging of that particular breed in the Chi cago contest. Sears, Reed Act as Mr. ABC's on Campus Ralph Sears and Lynn Reed turned out to be the "Mr. ABC's who were giving away packages of Chesterfield cigarets on campus Wednesday afternoon. The two students handad out a free package of cigarets to stu dents they met who had a package of that brand in their pockets. To students who were smoking Chesterfields when they encoun tered Mr. ABC, went two pack ages. Two more students will act as Mr. ABC's next week. Alexander Named National Block and Bridle Prexy M.- A. Alexander, professor of animal husbandry at the ag col lege, was elected national presi dent of Block and Bridle, national animal husbandry club, at the groups annual meeting in- Chic ago last week. The new president has been ad visor to the local organization since 1932 and has coached Ne braska livestock teams since 1930.
