I mentioned in a previous story that ISS actually is a non-membership organization. So how can the University of Nebraska "join" ISS? It can't, literally. But it can have ISS representation, and it can subscribe to the ISS program ol student exchange, relief and service. With whom would we be rub bing shoulders in ISS? Of the ten delegates on the study tour of Italy with me this summer, mine was the sole voice from the mid dlewest. There was one from Temple, one from Purdue, one from Rutgers, one from North western, one from Mills college, one from Harvard and three from Smith, besides myself. It goes without saying that ISS needs middlewest support and that it is anxious to have midwest dele gates. Good Cross Section. ISS delegates on the study tours cl Holland and Czechoslovakia were a fairly good cross-section cf the U. S. A. Among them were representatives from the Univer 6ity of California, Rockford, Sarah Lawrence college, Mt. Holyoke, Columbia, University of Illinois, Princeton, New Jersey College for Women, University of Washing ton, Yale, Fisk, Howard, Univer sity of Kentucky, University of Minnesota, University of Texas, Southern Methodist, and Lewis & Clark. The University of Nebraska is now "in" as of last June, and whether or not it stays depends polely on you the students. As your 1947 delegate, I can't repeat it often enough that university students owe it to themselves to broaden their knowledge, to meet other students from other univer sities all over the world, and to exchange ideas with them. It's worth the slight effort it takes, I'm convinced. Some of the bene fits may seem intangible and un real but let's have a look at pur pose. What does ISS stand for? What's it all about? Aids University World. Basically, ISS is a service or ganization which exists to be of the greatest possible aid to the Campus News In Brief Alpha Lambda Delta. As nothing but a service agency to the university community, ISS stands ready and willing to be used by ANY STUDENT OR GANIZATION. Its work falls into three main categories relief, in ternational education, and univer sity research and information. To further its international education program, ISS under takes the sponsorship of confer ences, study tours, such as the tour to Italy in which I took part, student exchanges, and the de velopment of international stu dent centers, such as the one in Combloux, France where the 1947 ISS delegation to Europe spent a week last August. (More about that later.) Searches for Truth. ISS is motivated by the sincere and disinterested search for truth, and it is this which has led it to resist all those forces tending to turn the university into a mere instrument of propaganda and which caused it before the war to break with Nazi Germany. In the war, democracy was triumph ant. Nevertheless, divergent re ligious . and political currents which tend to crystallize in re gional forces still divide univer sity people throughout the world. ISS offers a common paltform on which differing points of view can be confronted freely and in dependently, but this does not mean mere confrontation to give pleasure to the mind. ISS's role is based on the conviction that these exchanges of ideas serve the idea of truth, in which we of the university all believe, and enable trufh to emerge clearly; and, what is more, ISS sets before the di vided community certain tasks to be accomplished, a plan of action designed to unite them in the service of the imperative necessi ties of the movement. ISS believes in university com munity, and its total program of international education and re search is designed to strengthen this reality. It is a community of all those within this university professors as well as students, be tween whom no artificial gap must be allowed to exist. Believes in University Community. The whole work of WSR in which ISS cooperates so strongly is founded on the principle that the university community does exist and that more favored stu dents have a responsibility to stand by their fellows who are suffering most from the war and its aftermath. The common work of student relief is not an act of charity but an act of friendship and solidarity, in which one does not think of him who gives and ( him who receives, but only of how students can best work to gether to recreate the universities and strengthen students to take their part in the building of a world of liberty and justice ISS, then, has no formal mem bership beyond its assembly and staff. It is built upon three groups of associates: Corresponding mem bers, cooperational national com mittees, and friends of ISS. Friends of ISS subscribe each year a minimum of $3, and are kept informed on the activities of ISS through reception of publica tions and reports. Among the cooperating com mittees and corresponding mem bers outside of the U. S. are Aus tralia, Austria, Canada, China, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Eire, Finland, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, India, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Palestine, South Africa and Sweden. U. S. The Kappa Sigs were in gay spirits Saturday night when they opened their house to one and all. Even live ducks were waddling around from room to room. At the same time, the Phi Psi's were whooping it up at their party. Everyone was to come as their "Supressed Desire" and Sally Swiler and "Rip" Coyne, who were dressed in bonnets, booties and diapers won first prize for the cutest couple. Jim Kenner, dressed as a clown, stated his desire and really lived up to it. "Peeping Tom" or Buzz Howard, was dressed in a Vene tian blind while his date Susie Storz represented the third floor of the Theta House. At the Beta "Crud Party" were Chuck Boken with Bobbe Sprow and Joanie Farrar with Herb Glover. Also seen was Dealia Dean who made quite a hit with all the Betas. Squeezed Out. Some reflect that the group of 'pinners' could be divided into three classifications; "The Gaggor". "Just ft Steady Situation" and "W'r Buying a Ring" groups. "The Gaggers" include people who think up clever ways for other people to get pins and once obtaining them, can't think of any way to get them back. The prank ends up wish "Well,( it was just a gag, anyway." Usual ly this gag backfires and the unlucky girl keeps the pin until the male figures up some excuse to get it beck. Then the "Just a Steady Situation" involves an ex change of solemn promises to not date out on each other. Also a mutual agreement as to when the steady deal is off. This situation sometimes gets embarrassing when the girl wants to date some other boy, the boy doesn't want 1o do so, and the beautiful . friendship is broken up in a real display of temperament.
