THE. DAILY NEBRASKAN Saturday, NovemHer T, It&Tl PAGE 4 Individual Newspapers Tell Problems BY RUTH JEWETT Lincoln High While interviewing students at tending the Nebraska High School Press Association convention, the varied problems of their respec tive newspapers were brought out. Jackie McKinney: Northeast High School, representing the "Northeastern":. "The greatest, problem of our staff seems to be in choosing the topics for the editorials," she stated. Jackie commented that she enjoyed having a gossip column in a school paper, and that in her opinion it didn't add or detract from it, adding that she thought that the gossip columns were the most widely read. "We keep a record of the names that have appeared in these columns, so that they are not duplicated too often," replied Jackie, "and we have a rule that no member of the staff may have his name in it." Joan Omachi: "The Scoop", David City, David City High School: "Our paper comes out once a month, as it is financed only by the school board. For this reason and several others, the interest in the paper is small, making the problem of circula tion rather difficult. We will have to think of new and dif ferent ways to circulate it to arouse the students' Interest. " Joan is editor-in-chief of "The Scoop," and is thinking of at tending Nebraska W e s 1 e y a n next fall. Barbara Chescn: "The Advo cate." Lincoln High school, Lin- co! ' : I;;' !? that placing a cen sorship '"at can go into the pape up to a certain point. However, the Advocate sometimes has a little trouble along this line, but our biggest difiiculty lies in the fact that we have so little office space to work in efficiently." Barbara holds the position of associate editor on the "Advocate." Phyllis Olson: "The Imp" Cambridge: "Although our paper comes out only every two weeks, get ting news in on time see-in s to be a problem." Pat Palmquist: "The North Star", Omaha North, Omaha: "I am not too favorably im pressed with the University, mostly due to the fact that I prefer smaller schools. I am planning to attend a smaller college such as Grinnell or Carleton. Soroties and fra ternities do not appeal to me, and they seem to be a big thing on the campus here at Nebras ka." Pat, who is the third page editor for the "North Star," entered the current events con test. Concerning the United Na tions Organization, she replied, "I do not think that it will suc ceed, and will probably turn out like the "League of Nations" did after the first World War. The next step is world govern ment, and the United Nations is not a world government in that they are not united." Trouble With Leads Keith Schermerhorn: "The North Star," Omaha North, Oma ha: "For me the greatest trouble as sports editor is having the copy turned in on time. Also, getting a story started is diffi cult, but after that the rest of it seems to come off the end of the pencil. I would like to at tend the University of Nebraska school of Journalism, as I plan to take up journalistic sports writing in the future." Chuck Brenan: "The Spud," Alliance: "Gossip columns seem to be what the kids want, but it cer tainly takes our rating down," explained thic column writer from "The Spud." "I think these press conventions are a good deal, if you plan to continue in the journalistic field, as you discover the difference between writing for a high school paper and a University publication." When asked about his future plans, Chuck replied, "I would like to enter Stanford univer sity, in the business adminis tration course. One of my rea sons for not planning to make a future in journalism is because competition will be keen and because the field is definitely getting more crowded." -fif -.H I ;r - v V v J r! - 4ft . , -a ' J t In I jTfso tu fori $mM?Mw j AKIVAYS MULDER BETTER 7U ""13 better tcasotwg "I'M A CHESTERFIELD FAN BECAUSE THEY REALLY SATISFY" SEE BARBARA STANWYCK IN WARNER BROS.
