THE DAILY NEBRASKAN
PAGE 3
Game Slory . . .
(Continued from Page 1.)
ND 17 yard stripe while the Husk
ers rolled to four successive first
downs.
But this first sign of Huskcr
offensive strength wilted as a
fierce Irish forward wall held
Moomey for no gain on two suc
cessive line smashes and swarmed
Little Del Wiegand twice while
the workhorse quarteback vainly
sought open receivers.
The Irish took over and the
Nebraskans could not generate a
serious threat throughout the re
mainder of the contest.
Novak Individual Star.
If one individual standout could
be declared from either the Corn
husker crew or the Notre Dainc
unit, the honor would rest on the
shoulders of Novak. The tireless
bone-crushing defensive star was
all over the field for the Huskcrs
continually rocking Irish ball car
riers. Cletus Fischer, Husker back field
spark, turned in a strong back field
performance along with Mueller
and Wiegand, who shouldered the
entire Husker quarterbacking as
signment with the exception of
two plays.
For the Irish it was simply a
case of two much all-around tal
ent, John Panelli, starting full
back, ripped through the Husker
defense for the first Irish touch
down. Mike Swistowicz carried
the brunt of the attack while
ramming over for the second No
tre Dame tally.
Little Coy McGee, elusive Irish
speedster, slipped through the
Husker defense for 13 yards for
ND's third period score.
All-American Johnny Lujack
gave way to reserve quarterback
Frank Tripucka throughout most
of the second half. And the Lu
jack understudy responded with a
tremendous passing exhibition cli
maxed by a touchdown flip to
End Dough Winbright in the fi
nal stanza.
The injured Emil Sitko return
ed to action late in the contest
but showed no apparent ill-effects
as he romped through a tired
Husker crew for the last Irish
tally.
Husker Forwards Strong
In the Husker forward wall End
Ralph Damkroger, Tackles Charlie
Toogood and Carl Samuelson and
Guard Fred Lorenz turned in top
rate performances matching the
display of All-American George
Connor, tackle and ND captain.
Representatives of the Nebraska
student body presented the Corn
husker squad with a large red
and white floral "N" before the
game. Across the "N" was a ban
ner which read "We're Behind
You The Student Body."
Harriet Quinn of Gothenburg,
president of Tassels, women's pep
organization, presented the floral
piece to Game-Captain Novak.
