Lt. Lawrence J. Holan, Lincoln
army recruiting office, and John
lhuily. arts and science student,
presented diametrically opposed
viewpoints about the proposed
universal military training pro
gram during the Tuesday eve
ning meeting of the American
Veterans Committee at the Lin
coln YWCA.
Lieutenant Bolan told AVC
members that UMT's would re
serve their civilian rights and
would not be subject to courts
martial. Rolan also stated that
UMT's would not be sent over
seas. "Now that the Arctic has been
conquered and distances arc be
ing shrunk almost daily, the uni
versal military training ' program
would be a definite advantage to
tuir national defense," Lieutenant
Eolan concluded.
Hanly Disagrees.
"The best preparation for war
during peacetime would be for the
government to underwrite a uni
versal college education program
for the youth of America," Hanly
asserted
Hanly went on to say that, "Al
though the code of conduct for
UMT's would be drawn up by
members of religion, science, edu
cation, industry, and labor, the
khaki' element would loom over
whelmingly behind the civilian
board."
AVC Against I'MT.
Alter the talks a discussion pe
riod followed and individual AVC
