League championships are In
the balance this week as the
nation's football teams head into
the home stretch of the 1946 sea
son. Here are several ideas as
to what will occur Saturday:
Nebraska vs Oklahoma This
is it for the Huskers. A win will
net them a share of the Big Six
crown, a loss will consign them to
a lower position. Prior to the
Partington misfortune Nebraska
could have been rated as a prob
able upsetter, but with Little Joe
out of the lineup the Scarlet de
fense will suffer.
A look at those Sooner weights
makes one shudder. 'Passes seem
to be the only chance for Master
son's men. Oklahoma by three
touchdowns.
Kansas State at New Mexico
After a long, long trail, the Wild
cats have a chance for a victory
over the Loboes. The quality of
opposition the K Staters have
faced gives them a slight edge
over the New Mexico aggregation.
Illinois vs Northwester n
There's a Rose Bowl trip in the
offing for the Illini if they win,
and the lure of the coast plus the
financial gain involved should in
spire Coach Ray Eliot's boys to
great heights.
Michigan vs Ohio 5'ate The
Wolverines have a slight chance
to take the Big Nine pennant,
providing Illinois loses, and the
Maize and Blue will keep their
hopes alive with a win over the
unpredictable Buckeyes.
Minnesota vs Wisconsin Coach
Bernie Bierman's boys are rolling
now, just as he had foreseen. The
win over Iowa last week pepped
up the Gophers and they can
achieve fifth place in the Western
Conference standings with a vic
tory. Minnesota by seven points.
Indiana vs Purdue This annual
clash for the Old Oaken Bucket
should be all Hoosier, for after
an open date in which to gather
their forces for a final effort Pete
Pihos and his mates will have
too much power for the Boiler
makers. Rice vs Texas Christian The
Owls are not forgetting that TCU
Texas game last week when the
Horned Frogs surprised the fav
orites, and will be prepared for
a toughie. Rice will win.
Mississippi State vs Mississippi
Football's forgotten man, Shorty
McWilliams, will be no hand for
the Maroons' tilt with their old
foes, but he hasn't forgotten how
to run with that pigskin.
UCLA vs Southern California
Probably that day's top game, the
winner here will be the Pacific
Coast representative in the Rose
Bowl. After a weak start the
Trojans have perked up and are
not too far below the all-victorious
Bruins. However we pick
UCLA to be the winner by a
narrow margin.
California vs Stanford The In
dians have a good fullback in
Lloyd Merriman and ought to be
able to eke out a win over the
Golden Bears who have suffered
several severe trouncings this sea
son.

Bernie Masterson's Cornhuskers
are basing hopes fop a win over
Oklahoma on the passing arms of
Sam Vacanti, Fred Metheny and
Dick Thompson, as well as one the
records of Sooner-UN battles in
the past.
In 25 meetings between the two
clubs the southern team has man
aged to trip the Scarlet eleven
only six times, and three of these
wins came during the war years
when the Husker teams were
manned by green teen-agers.
Stastistics have shown that it is
next to impossible for Oklahoma
opponents to do much damage
through the bristling Sooner line
which has functioned with such
effectiveness that Oklahoma ranks
fourth among the nation's teams
in rushing defense.
Much of the Nebraska touch
down punch is contained in the
twinkling feet of Dick Hutton and
Bill Moomey, slippery halfbacks
who are apt to explode for a tally
every time they get hold of the
ball. But in case the Scarlet for
wards cannot open holes in the
Sooner wall, the Huskers will
switch to an aerial game.
If the Nebraska scoring power
can be touched off, the game may
develop into a high scoring affair,
for Sooner backs Joe Golding. Ed
die Davis and Jack Mitchell have
not been completely halted this
season.
Until Joe Partington came up
with a broken hand in scrimmage
action an interesting Individual
dual was in prospect, because the
: Sooncrs boast of center John Ra-
pacz, who along with Partington
is considered to be the best of the
conference center crop.
Fullback Tom Novak came out
of Wednesday's practice with a
bad leg, but is expected to get
, plenty of action against the Soon-
ers. Chargm Tom is rated as the
hardest running back in the Big
Six this fall and his presence in
the Nebraska backfield will lend
a lot of force to the Scarlet attack.
From Norman the Nebraska
traveling party will head west for
a battle with the potent UCLA
Bruins on November 30 at Los
Angeles. The Huskers will arrive
back in Lincoln on December 3.
