A GusEiers (Defeat IW;
Tangle Again Today
A two run outburst in the
eighth Inning gave the University
of Nebraska baseball team its
sixth victory of the season Mon
day afternoon against the Kansas
Jayhawka by a 7-5 count, on the
Nebraska diamond.
The Huskers had an early 3-0
lead, but the visitors got to start
ing pitcher Wally Scheef in the
fourtn inning lor two runs and
. added throe more in the sixth off
Johnny Olson to take the lead
Big Jim Sandstedt was on the
hill for Nebraska when the Scar
let forced back into the lead, and
the husky Omaha right hander
received credit for the win. In
the three and two-thirds innings
that he pitched, Sandstedt allowed
one hit and fanned seven batters,
An error by KU pitcher Tom
Saffeld allowed Nebraska to take
the lead in the eighth. With Bob
Bolen on third after a walk and
a Texas league single by Sand
stedt, Fritz Hegwood laid down a
bunt in front of the plate. Saffeld
came in on the ball- but bobbled
it and Bolen scored. Hegwood
also scored, being forced across
when Wes Maser walked with
the bases loaded.
Huskers Score.
Nebraska's first runs came in
the opening frame. Third base
man Wilbur Baack singled with
two out and scored on Wes Ma
ser's triple to deep left field.
Maser scored on a passed ball to
give Coach Frank Smagacz's team
an early lead.
Baack and Maser collected over
half of the Huskers' seven hi is,
as each garnered two safeties. For
the visiting Kansans, Irv Hayden
and Dale Morrow were the slug
gers. In the fourth frame Hayden
tripled and Morrow followed with
a home run to terminate Sheef's
stay on the mound.

Pistol Team Will
Fire in Nationals
The University of Nebraska
Naval ROTC pistol team will com
pete in the annual national Navy
ROTC pistol competition next
Saturday, May 11, Capt. Mitchell
D. Matthews, USN, commanding
officer, announced Monday.
Team Roster.
The Nebraska team, competing
against 40 ether units, is com
posed of J. B. Stetson, (captain);
R. G. Beason, E. B. Borst, P. A.
Christel, F. P. Haas, F. E. Hansen,
J. P. Olson, R. H. Raduenz, J. C
Schneider and N. J. Sibert.
In a recent meet Nebraska de
feated the University of Illinois
ROTC team, 882 points to 837.

Five IM Sports Remain
For Late Spring Finish
Events remaining on the intra
mural sports schedule are the ten
nis doubles, Softball, horseshoes,
golf and outdoor track and field.
All of these sports are now under
way except golf and track, which
are scheduled for May 12 and
May 16 and 18, respectively.
In Paramount's "Calcutta" Alan
Ladd plays an airline pilot flying
the treacherous "hump" between
India and China.

Squads Remain
Idle This Week
While the Nebraska track and
golf squads lay off this week in
preparation for the Big Six cham
pionships in Lincoln May 17 and
18, the Husker baseball and ten
nis squads take over the variety
snorts scene.
Coach Frank Smagacz sends his
baseball team into action three
more times this week, after the
Kansas game yesterday. Today
the Jayhawks are the foes for the
second time, and Friday and Sat
urday the Scarlet nine moves to
Ames for a return scries with
Iowa State.
Tennis Trip.
Cornhusker tennis players will
make a two day invasion of Iowa,
playing at Iowa State Friday and
moving to Ottumwa Saturday for
matches with the Ottumwa Navy
Base netsters.
High school performers will
take over the track and field spot
light as they compete in the state
championships Jn four classes Fri
day and Saturday on the Me
morial Stadium track.
Last week the Husker baseball
and track teams made every start
a winning one as they trimmed
Missouri teams in both sports. The
track team won a dual meet Sat
urday while the baseball sound
swept a Saturday double header
after Friday's game was rained
out.

Championship
Phi Delta Theta took first place
honors in the intramural volley
ball competition, which wound up
last week after spirited rivalry
among 19 teams, by defeating Phi
Gamma Delta in the finals.
