Friday, March 8, 1946 Page THE NEBRASKAN 6 maqqsuL I By Oracle Smith and Barbara Turk. Ah yes, the big day has at last arrived, and big plans have been made for the Inter fraternity Ball tonight. Many of our fair campus kings and queens plan to take in the grand celebration including Joan Crittenden with Wally Graff; Eileen Hepperly with Sam Warren; Jo George with Sam Huston; and Jean Metzger with Bob Diers. It is all very evident that dear old UN happily wel comes the return of this long, famous a i lair. Bob Walters seems to be divid ing his time between key sisters June Korb and Betty Burns as of lately. All good stones come to a happy end so they say . . . The anchor gals are doing all right for themselves with the Beta clan this weekend; Joan Vingers with Jack Bailey; Dorothy Manion with Don Reynelds; and Roy Fer ris with Paula Jones looks as though the situation is well in hand. Friday night dates include Betty Sparks with Johnny Bell; Suzanne Leininger with Ralph Sears; and Polly Anne Hare with Charlie Humpal. A big time is in store for all. Sunday night will prove to be anything but dull for Del Roth with Annie Miles and Lee Lavan With Ginger Walters. By the way, rumors have it that wtea totler" Wayne Denning will migrate into Omaha from the DU mansion this weekend. No doubt observing lent. "Lent that is." Omaha will also be the night snot for Bob Metheny and Sally O'Shea who plan to attend a hockey game. Little Mr. Cupid is still fran tically selling his wares to many of our Nebraska brothers- and sisters. With the announcement of the engagement of Mary Lancas ter to Bob Hopkins, and the re cent pit.ning of Mimi Hahn to Kail Mueller, we all stare into space with envious eyes. Then, there is that steady deal between Barbie Hockenbarger and Bill Ferguson . . . not to forget that mutual understanding between Marcy Reich and Harold Mozer. Oh well, we all can't have as good luck. Clair Steele and Harry Wag ner are also going to try the steady set-up. We don't know how they do it, but we wish some of the lucky girls on this campus would reveal their formulas. Formula A worked just fine for cute Ginny Pester, and she will be seen on Sunday night with NRO Jim Pettis prov ing her theory. Jim Winchell has rather taken a fancy to Mary Helen Hinman, while Donnie Wagner and Milton Mack seem to be doing okay too. Rain or shine, the world still turns, and from all evidence, thisi weekend is going to be one full of excitement and fun. Knowing that no one will be disappointed, we elose . . . Students Look Like Everyone ButThemselves BY JEANNE KERRIGAN. By the way, has anyone besides us noticed the resemblance be tween Tom Cornish and Captain Marvel? Believe us, it is a very striking one. Anyone wishing to check up on that statement may rush right to the nearest drug store or magazine rack and pur chase a copy of the Captain Mar vel comic book for only 10 cents a copy. On second thought, we have some much treasured second hand ones that we will gladly sell to some appreciative person for only half price. In fact, my roommate has wall papered our room with pictures of our hero (Captain Marvel, we mean). Incidentally, the Sig Chi's have Captain Marvel's counterpart, Billy Batson, going under some assumed and absurd name and claiming to come from Cuba. Since they keep him locked in a closet, we have never had the dubious pleasure of seeing this character, but we have heard rumors. Eddie Bracken? Speaking of resemblances, every time we see Chuck Hemmingson we have to take a second look to make sure we are not gazing at a carbon copy of Eddie Bracken. When we were sitting in our room very nobly and diligently laboring on an English theme the other day, who should bounce in but Judy Garland we thought But on second look, we realized that it was merely Helen Prince. Lauren Bacall may be the Look; Frankie, the Voice; and Betty Grable, the Legs; but Dale Hatch certainly has earned such a title as the Laugh or should we say Giggle. Have you ever heard him laugh? And then there is George T. Shestack need we say more? Ellie Swanson helped us the other day for two solid hours (well, at least ten minutes) to figure out what on earth Bob Gillian resembled. We thought it must be something, but after much thought and concentration, we decided that it couldn't be anything in this world. Someone just read this over our shoulder, gave a snort of utter disgust and flounced away so, not being appreciated, we will stop beating our brains out, wast ing words, paper and typewriter ribbon, and retire defeated and completely dejected. There are a few carefrree souls who never study for six weeks' tests. While their comrades are burying themselves in stacks of illegible notes and rigging up nooses on the chandelier, to be used in case of emergency, they gallop around looking for a copy of "Showdown" (Errol Flynn's novel) or scream lustily for a "second, third and fourth for bridge " These nonchalant characters are avid proponents of the fallacious theory expounded by so many professors: "If you don't know it now, you never will. Twelve hours of cramming won't do any good. You cither know it or you don't. Go to bed early; a clear head is important above all else." Clear Head. I tried this just once. I had a clear head that mornoing, all right probably the clearest head anyone ever had. In fact, there wasn't a thing in it. But the spon taneous generation which I had anticipated the miraculous ger mination of all the answers in my "clear" brain didn't materialize. Instead all I got was five points for signing my name at the top ftf the paper neatly. I decided afterward tht perhaps teachers assume that you look at your textbooks once or twice be tween exams. It's a revolutionary ties down to diligent concentra- thought, I'll admit, but profes sors have been known to get queer ideas every once in awhile. Seriousness. But the majority of the students take six-weeks' exams seriously so seriously that they find it necessary to spend the next five weeks recuperating. The average coed begins her preparation at about seven o'clock. Surrounding herself with books and notebooks (she's borrowed these from some pledge who found time to get to classes once or twice), and a bushel of apples, to ward off the inevitable hunger pains, she set- tion. By nine o'clock, she has prob ably progressed as far as page 3, and is getting in just a little over her head. In spite of the consol ing fact that she has only 269 pages left, the project begins to depress her, and she rushes over to the Student Union to fortify herself with sixteen cups of black coffee. More Difficulties. After that, studying is even more difficult. The girl next door, a music major, is practicing for her trombone final, and the walls keep bouncing out and knocking See HABITS.
