THE NEBRASKAN
Sooners Top
Husker Cage
Quint, 51-44
Inaccuracy at the free throw
line cost the Nebraska basketball
team an upset victory over the
Oklahoma Sooners Monday night
at the coliseum, for the Huskers
outscored the visitors from the
field, but lost a 51-44 contest to
Bruce Drake's hustling quintet.
The Comhuskers came to life
vith a roar late in the first half,
and wiped out a 15 to 4 Oklahoma
ead. As the half ended Pop Klein's
crew was trailing by one point,
22 to 21.
With five minutes left in the
Kame, a conference affair, the
Huskers were behind, 36-34, but
the more experienced Sooners, led
by .all-conference guard. Jack
Landon, pulled away, using their
free throw prowess to secure their
margin of victory.
Don Buelow and Bill Whaley
cashed in on charity tosses late in
the game, as the over-anxious
Huskers, fighting to get posses
sion of the ball, committed nu
merous fouls.
Gayle Lebsack led the Nebraska
scorers with eight points, all com
ing on long one hand set shots.
Lithe Don Barry gave the Soon
ers plenty of trouble under both
basket?, while Bob Korte came
through with needed points in the
second half to keep the Scarlet
cagers in contention.
Courty Paces Sooners.
Paul Courty, left handed shot
maker, led the Oklahoma scorers
with 15 points, while Dick Reich
and Landon kept the Nebraska
rebound efforts stifled.
The Huskers potted 17 field
goals to 16 for the Sooners, but
the visitors cashed in on 19 of 30
free throws to keep their Big Six
championship hopes alive. Nebras
ka cagers connected with only 10
of 26 charity tosses, and watched
their victory hopes go glimmer
ing when the southern invaders
added to their narrow lead late in
