rage o THE NEBRASKAN Friday, December 7, 1945 "H OJStKEtP U vJ7 U I LL U U IL U Br George Miller The mystery is solved. News that Bernie Masterson is the new leader of Nebraska grid iron fortunes brings approval from all corners of the state. The former Husker star has a large following of home state fans who followed his career, both in the navy and as a professional player with interest, and he will receive wholehearted backing from all loyal Cornhuskers. Masterson is a staunch advocate of the "T" formation, so next year's Husker eleven will un doubtedly be well-schooled in the intricacies of the quick-opening plays of the T. During his years with the Chi cago Bears Masterson was inval uable in schooling Bear quarter backs. Although his prowess as a coach was not widely publicized, his fame was well known in the inner circles throughout the Na tional Professional League. Recent releases from the Uni versity of Kansas indicate that Art Peterson, Husker basketball star last year, is having difficulty I breaking into the starting five for the Jayhawks. The gangling Pe terson undoubtedly has a deadly basket eye, but his defensive skills are not up to Big Six stand ards, and apparently Phog Allen was not long in finding this weak ness. Nebraska basketball squads in coming years will draw upon a huge reservoir of student talent. At the present over 500 univer sity students are competing in the cage sport, either as intramural players or as members of the varsity and B team squads. Credit for much of this revival of athletics goes to Intramural Lou Means who has rejuvenated the intramural program in all sports, and as a result varsity squads in all sports will benefit. Next on the intramural slate is an all-university wrestling tourn ament which will give wrestling coach Jerry Adam a line on po tential varsity material, as well as providing competition for uni versity students who may not be lieve that their grappling skill is on a par with the manbending tactics of varsity squadmen.
