A friendly twinkle In bright, blue eyes and a ready laugh char acterize William H. Hlce, the new addition to the journalism depart ment. Recently of Fremont high school, Mr. Hice was wel comed with ten rousing cheers and a 21-gun salute by the ; - journalism ma jors. "Since I 111 1 T" A ilKea rreinuiii g so very well," Mr. Hice laughed, "I had e !;,, icw niioB.v- Lincoln Journal. ings on coming VV. II, Hice. to Lincoln. But you know," he confided, "I've lost 'em all!" "It will take awhile, I know, to become acquainted with the stu dents, but already I feel as if I belonged. I'm really sold!" Mr. Hice, who got his master's at the University of Iowa, has had sev eral summers of practical experi ence working on various outstate newspapers. "It's all right to know the theory," he said, "but I want to see how that theory works!" No Easy Task. Teaching beginning and ad vanced classes in journalism is no easy task, but Mr. Hice enjoys it very much. "In fact," he joked, "I often get so interested that I forget to give assignments! Of course the students hate that." When asked if he thoiTght he gave hard assignments, the new mentor replied, "I don't honestly know all I ever expect in as signments is that they be thor oughly covered whether hard or easy, and that at the end of the semester we have covered the material." Mr. Hice believes very strongly in practical experience for aspir ing journalists and recommends work on various newspapers as the student learns his subject. The new teacher announced that he is planning to read his own papers, believing as he does that the best way to really know and help a pupil, is to read his paper and know his strong and weak points. "Especially in news stories and the like, where the choice of words and description is so im portant," he added. ' A Bachelor. Mr. Hice Is a bachelor one at a time, eals and staled. "Mv main job here is to prove myself the past means nothing. I hope I can keep the good record Fre mont had, but only time will tell." "One of mv Greatest Dleasures ." he said with a grin, "is to keep in touch with mv former stu dents. Schools means more if thp teachers and' the students really know each other!" Mr. Hice has great plans for the department of Journalism, and together with Professor Blood and the Journal ism students, they can't help but succeed.
