About The daily Nebraskan. ([Lincoln, Neb.) 1901-current | View Entire Issue (Oct. 15, 1944)
Sunday, UcToEer 15, 1944 Dick Dilsaver An item that has been sticking In our craw for some time is that there are some Nebraskans, on the campus and elsewhere, who are of the opinion that Nebraska should turn "quitter" and hang up the pads and cleated shoes or in plain language, drop varsity football We can think of noth ing so likely to lose the prestige of UN at the present time as this. For more than 50 years the university has fielded a squad and always did these boys go on the field, as the young athletes of today's modern eleven do, to do or die for "dear old Nebraska U." If we have that kind of spirit and that kind of tradition, then why in the ding-ding should any loyal Nebraskan ever think of UN dropping football. Maybe we're losing the bigger share of our games this year as last and with 1945 not a whole lot brighter unless hostilities should cease and allow many of our Husker athletes who have had game experience to come back but aren't there other schools in this land who are in the same pickle and still fighting on, come what may? Also what do fans all over the nation think of those quitters who didn't have the courage to put a team on the field this year or last? They think very darn little of them for after all no one likes a quitter. We will allow that there were some teams who under no circum stances could have fielded an eleven, competent or not. But that still doesn't clear those who could have but were scared they might be beaten and supposedly lose the honor which they had held as a victorious team but which they definitely lost when they tossed in a quitter's sponge. Another good reason to keep the grid game going here is that all of our branches of Vnilitary services are advocating that col leges over the nation keep their physical departments open for the benefit of those men and boys Gleaming black pat en1 with smart stitch ing trim. Still another viewnoint is trm? alumni and former students of the university who are serving in the armed forces both overseas and within the continental lim its are all for UN enrrvini? on on the gridiron and other varsity sports as well. With these men, many 01 them giving their lives for us at home. Dulline frr con tinuance of varsity athletics we tninK it would be darned rotten to let them down. Football (Continued from Page One.) rights for the extra point. In the second half the Hooslers again lost no time in going to the pay dirt as Russell tossed a pass to Klusezeski to mark up another Indiana score. Again Russell fig ured in a goal-line drive as he went around the UN left end to make the score stand at 35-0 after Tavener's conversion. And the sixth of the tallies came as Ralph Thompson scooted the Nebraska left . flank with another marker being hung as Russell swiveled past the UN secondary on a 23 yard scoring jaunt. To top all of the day's scoring, Miller lobbed a pass to Armstrong with but ten seconds of play remaining. Figuring in the Cornhuskers' futile play were Colerick and Selzer, while Ravensberg was the outstanding in the Indiana line while Russell ran wild in the backfield.
