If you have even half-heartedly been considering the practical value of suicide and are getting to the stage where you're pricing harp lessons, we advise you to let Artie Shaw's record of "Gloomy Sunday" strictly alone. This little dirge caused quite a sensation a few years ago when it first came out and earned for itself the title of "suicide song." Seems that morbid-minded per sons, after hearing it, would run out to the nearest river and jump in. Several issues of "Gloomy Sunday" have been appearing on the music stands again recently. Spurred on by its reputation and curious as to whether our nerves were still steady, we blithely picked up the gory thing and listened to the sad story of why "my heart and I have decided to end it all." You'll probably find Shaw's black-mood arrangement very infectious. We were about to walk out and hurl ourselves in front of an oncoming car, but at the last minute remembered we had a column to write. Bunny Berrigan's treatment of "A Study in Brown" (remember it? About 1938) is perfect for offsetting any hangover from "Gloomy Sunday." It is played moderately fast, very smooth, full of cute riffs. All in all very danc able. Don't miss hearing it. On the other side is "Caravan," fea turing a lot of Berrigan's low down trumpet. If you like the Berrigan technique, it's a good deal. If not well, you still have "Study in Brown." "Porgy and Bess" Is probably the most-recorded American work ever written. There are many 10 and 12 inch waxings of selections from the Gershwin folk-opera, both vocal and instrumental. However, only two albums of the complete opera have been re leased. One is Decca's, with Todd Dun can and Eva Jessye, both of the original cast, singing the leads. After hearing it you will probably Coeds Begin Play In WAA Soccer Baseball Tourney Twenty-four teams will partici pate in the WAA soccer baseball tournament beginning Monday evening with three games being played on the field behind the coliseum. Pi Phi-1 vs. Alpha Phi-1. wonder what a nice guy like Gershwin ever did to deserve something like that. The stage presentation was undoubtedly ex cellent, but it lost a lot in the recording. Or perhaps it just suffers in comparison with Victor's album. Lawrence Tibbet and Helen Jep son sing in such a way that one imagines "Porgy and Bess" was written exclusively for them. Al exander Smallens directs the original orchestra and chorus through effectively - arranged background music. Most novel item in the album is "Summertime" being sung against a background of crap shooters. Besides her regular ren dition, Jepson sings the famed lullaby while Tibbet and his cronies can be heard yelling about "7 come 11" and "roll that beau tiful number." Just a hint: here's three weeks' advance notice to get a date for Monday. Oct. 23. Very reliable rumor has it that you can dance to Harry James, in person, then. Coeds Exhibit Various Hair Fashions at UN With simplicity as their motto, a hairbrush as a tool and charm as the goal, "U" coeds have come out again this semester with hair do creations anyone could be really proud of. Topping the "Hairdo Headline" list comes a shining bit of loveli ness entitled the "feather bob." Worn either short or long, it is "cut to curl" and after it is whipped together with pin curls (in those "wee" hours of the morn) lends real youthful charm to a gal s appareance. As always the ever common pompadour holds its popularity position. Worn extremely high ("boys have pockets, girls have "pomps") or very low it waves slightly back and a colorful rib Don is onen seen peering over the top. The sides, usually shoul der length, fall in a loose fluffy mass. "Upsweeps" still line the cam pus adding height and sophistica iion 10 collegiate appearance. Worn in "Bangs" or "pomps" it is a great trick if you were too tired to "do" your hair the night oeiore. (And aren't we all?" Remember how tiresome "Pig tails" became after years of them in grade school. Well, here we are again, back to shining braids tied with bright attractive rib bons and topped with bangs or pomps. A fad of our grandmother's is back too, in the form of a "bun." Somewhat resembling a huee doughnut, they are usually worn at the nape of the neck and with a "rat" as their secret evolve into monstrous sizes and shapes.
