Douglas .author of "The Robe," and other best selling novels, will be commencement speakers for the university May 21 and 22. Chancellor Carmichael, national ly known educator, will deliver the commencement address Monday, May 22, and Mr. Douglas, who spent many years in the ministry before he began writing books, will be the bacealureate speaker Sunday evening, May 21. Dr. Carmichael, chancellor of Vanderbilt since 1937, was in pub lic school administration for sev eral years and for nine years was president of Alabama college. A Rhodes scholar at Oxford univer sity when the first World war broke out, he served with the Briti.sh army and later with the American army in France. Mr. Douglas was past 50 when his plans to write a book of essays on "Personality Protection Thru Private Philanthropy" resulted in "Magnificent Obsession," a novel which appeared without fanfare and crept to the top of best seller Religious Council Inaugurates New Vesper Services To encourage campus unity among the churches the survey committee of the religious welfare council announced Thursday that they will sponsor a campus vesper next year to replace the YWCA vespers which were held every Tuesday. Plans discussed by the group Include a short service once a week with different denominations in charge of the meeting. The committee hopes to have several outstanding speakers during the school year in addition to the other regular groups. Co-chairmen of this committee are Shirley Hillmer and Bill Miller. Robert Drew is the advisor. The survey committee also an nounced plans for the summer which include the securing of re ligious preference lists, sponsoring of a study group, and holding two or three joint parties or picnics. lists on the strength of word-of-mouth testimonials. Mr. Douglas, who now lives in Los Angeles, held pastorates in many states before giving up the ministry for full time writing. Kappa Plii Methodist Group Has Mothers' Tea Kappa Phi, Methodist women's group, held a tea in honor of their mothers and senior members Sunday.
