No Scrimmage Scheduled;
Sessions Run Thru April

Husker footballers swiner into
spring practice this afternoon,
with checking out of equipment
and light limbering up exercises
scheduled for the opening session.
Head grid coach A. J. Lewan
dowski said yesterday that he
hopes for a turnout of about 30
men. "It's hard to predict how
many men will report," said Lew,
"but I look for at least 30 candi
dates and have hopes that more
will turn out."
Plans No Scrimmages.
Lewandowski's present plans
call for no scrimmages, but Lew
pointed out that the amount of
contact work will be determined
by the number and ability of
the candidates. Passing, kicking,
calisthenics, and skull drills will
feature early practice sessions.
Contact work may come later if
the boys appear ready for it.
Lewandowski is counting on
four lettermen and one newcomer
to provide the nucleus of his

Kessler Set to Go.
Hazard, a e-uard last fall, will
hold down a tackle slot in spring
drills, while Gissler is slated to
remain at an end post. Kops will
tpam with Hazard at tackle, and
big Buzz Hollins seems ready for
further service at fullback.
Kessler, ineligible last fall,
appears set to grab the quar
terback post. In Kessler and
Hollins, Lewandowski has the
start of a strong backfield. The
Husker mentor hopes that spring
drills will uncover a tailback and
a wingback to run with Kessler
and Hollins in the backfield.

Just returned to his coliseum office from a week's jaunt
to New York City for the annual conclave of college basket
ball coaches, Husker athletic director A. J. Lewandowski
relates a story of an action-packed seven days. In addition
to attending the coaches' 'meeting, Lew watched several of
the nation's best collegiate basketball teams in action at
Madison Square Garden and journeyed up Hudson to West
Point, there to visit Colonel Biff Jones, his predecessor in
the athletic director's post at UN and now head of the ath
letic department at the military academy.
At the garden, Lew saw portions of both the annual
invitational tourney, which yearly draws the top collegiate
teams of the nation, and the eastern playoffs of the National
Collegiate Athletic association's annual tournament. The
best team he saw in action on his eastern trip, however, was
not a college club, according to Lewandowski. In Lew's
opinion, the Mitchell Field service team, composed largely of
former Long Island university cagers, was far and away
the best club he watched, ranking over such powerful col
lege teams as Dartmouth, Catholic university, and Ohio.
At West Point, the Hutker coach saw several other
former UN athletic personalities in addition to Colonel
Jones. Capt. Paul Amen, who starred on Husker football
and baseball teams in the late 30s, is head baseball coach at
the Point and, according to Lew, has prospects for a power
ful squad this season.
