Omaha South edged Columbus
33-10 at the coliseum last night to
win the state high school class A
baskeilall championship in a
tightly played, bitterly fought
game.
The game was close throughout,
with the Packers coming from an
8-9 deficit at the end of the third
quarter to push past the Discover
ers in a tight fourth quarter that
had the stands roaring. Little Dan
Georgeff. sparkplug of the South
quint, drove in alone for a set-up
on a tip-off play after one minute
oof the fourth period to send the
Tackers into a 10-9 lead. Shober
followed with a free throw and
Carrillo hit with a jvimp shot to
push the Packers into a 13-9 lead
with two and a half minutes left.
Rich's gift toss a minute later
brought Columbus to 13-10, but
the Packers controlled play for the
last minute and a half and suc
cessfully stalled to protect their
lead.
Columbus Leads First.
Columbus had held a 3-2 first
quarter lead, with South rallying
in the second quarter to grab a
6-4 halftime edge on a basket by
Carrillo and free tosses by
Geoieff and Myers. The Discover
ers regained the lead in the third
period on a basket by Rood and
free throws by Rich and Elston,
grabbing a 9-8 load as the quarter
ended. Then came Georgeff s set
up to touch off the winning last
period rally for Cornie Collins'
Packers.
