UN Meets Iowa State January 8 Second home game of the year for the Huskers will be the Nebraska-Iowa State fray Saturday evening, January 8. From here it looks like tough sledding for Ne braska. By January 8, Husker Coach Ad Lewandowski will have a few more vacancies in his nquad than at the South Dakota game last night, as several team mem bers are slated to drop out within the next couple of weeks. Iowa State Rates High. Iowa State is not bothered by lack of adequate material. Coach Lew Menze has three returning lettermen, Ray and Roy Wehde and Gene Oulman, in addition-to a healthy crop of navy trainees stationed on the campus. Lyle Naylor from Drake and Robert Sauer from Washington university in St. Louis are two of the more promising of the Naval trainees who are slated for first string positions. Sports writers in the middlewest predict that the Iowa State five is just about top3 in the Big Six and the Cyclones were UK favorites in their game with Minnesota last night. The Cyclones beat the Iowa Pre-Flight Sea hawks 31 to 29 and Minnesota lost to the Seahawks 34 to 54. Minnesota took Nebraska 40 to 21. Probable starting line-up for the Iowa Staters against the Huskers is as follows: Ray Wehde and Roy Wehde, forwards; Gene Oulman. center; and Robert Sauer, Lloyd Kester, and Lyle Nsylor tossing a coin for guard positions. Preceding the Iowa State-UN game will be a preliminary be tween the Air Base Raiders and the Nebraska College Training Detachment. Lt. Shiffer Promoted Lt Harry V. Shiffer, assistant Adjutant general on the campus, .vas promoted last Thursday to the rank of first lieutenant and has been transferred as commandant of the Denver College of Medicine at Denver. Lieutenant Shiffer has been sta tioned at the university since last March. Ne braska led by a slight margin at the half, due largely to the fine au-around play of Ken Hollins Hollins consistently cashed in on rebounds for many of the Husk er's points. In the second half, the Huskers broke away to an early splurge of scoring and built up a substantial lead which they hever CelebratiWii ... (Continued from page 1.) day, an air mail gift from Santa. Many of the men will visit Lin coln families, some through the USO, on Christmas day. This part of Nebraska friendliness is sin cerely appreciated by the trainees. A Wonderful Subject. Something a little beyond Christmas will be the between term furlough of the ASTP from January second to ninth. This has been the subject of most conversations and much planning recently. The Dents are a little luckier, getting 2 weeks ntarting the 22nd. So there will be a no ticeable lack of khaki around the campus for a couple of days after civilian classes start ngain in January. This will be a different Christ mas for everyone particularly for the people back home. Thv probably won't even be able to get turkey for Christmas dinner. Till January ninth then, may you all have a wonderful vacation after all, friendliness, happiness, and Christmas spirit aren t rationed. Foundation . . . Team Improves. All in all it was an interesting contest to watch inasmuch as both teams were of nearly equal cali ber. Naturally, the boys made plenty of mistakes, but they rshow promise of much improvement in the future. Coach Lewandowski substituted freely throughout the game in an effort to find the best possible combination. The smooth play of Big Ken Hollings, Al Art man, and Gus Eager were bright spots for the Huskers. The boys will have a rest now until after dljulbdbv Nt'-MKOS.
