Gosnell Talks at Second
Marriage Series Program
In the second of the aeries of

Plays in Variety
Show at Union
A "jive trio" of ASTP men will
play at the Union variety show
Sunday at 4 p. m. in the ballroom.
Members of the trio are Harold
Carnes, bass; Joe Wilkinson, pi
ano, and Ken Strickler, clarinet.
"Western Dare," a George Pal
puppet cartoon in technicolor, will
be shown as a prelude to "High.
Wide, and Handsome." This is th
story of the construction of the
first oil pipe line from western
Pennsylvania to the seaboard and
stars Randolph Scott and Irene
Dunne.
This variety show will be open
to all students and Union milt
tary members.
University Sends
Dean C. Ohlfather,
De Beau f re lo Meet
Dean C. H. Oldfather and Pro
fessor W. L. De Baufre have been
designated as representatives for a
meeting at Denver on Decem
ber 3, 4, 5, of colleges and uni
versities from eight states in this
area which are studying the status
of the humanities in both liberal
arts and professional education.
The conference is being held
under the auspices of the founda
tion of the advancement of the
social sciences of the University
of Denver.
Dr. Pool Speaks
Before Women's
C. C. Division
Dr. R. J. Pooh chairman of the
department of Botany of the uni
versity, was guest speaker Tues
day before the women's division
of the chamber of commerce.
Approximately 200 members ol
the division listened to Dr. Pool
speak. He has traveled widely in
this country and in Europe and
showed the group pictures on Nor
way along with his talk on places
he has been.

Can We Make it Work?" went on
to Bay that one out of five mar
riages end in divorce, but only one
out of 50 marriages made in the
church end in divorce. The basic
causes for divorce, he continued
are carelessness in self and per
sonal approaches to the other per
son, jealousy or the lack of confi
dence on the part of one person,
extravagence and thoughtlessness.
To make marriage work, said
Rev. Gosnell, there must be co
operation; nagging and lack of
demonstration are damaging to
marriage. It must be well planned
from social, economic and personal
adjustment standpoints."
Thursday, Dec. 2 Dr. Mclitzer
will speak on "Qualifications For
Marriage."
Dean Bengtson
Speaks at YMCA
Dean Nels A. Bengston of the
Junior Division appeared as guest
speaker before the Hiram club of
the YMCA Wednesday. He spoke
on "Life and Times in Norway."
His talk was illustrated by colored
slides and photographs taken by
himself.
Welfare Group
Plans Annual
Religious Meet
Voting to sponsor a yearly con
vocation of all religious groups
and an award, to be presented at.
Honor's Convocation, to the stu
dent who has done most to im
prove interfaith on the campus,
the Religious Welfare Council
opened activities of the year with
a dinner last night at the Baptist
Student house.
The proposal for an Honors
award must be approved by the
honors committee. Announcements
of the year's calendar and adop
tion of new resolutions were made
by Dr. Charles Patterson, presi
dent. Eugene Floyd, secretary of uni
versity YMCA, gave his report of
use of YM functions by service
men ,and Rev. Ray Kerns, Presby
terian pastor, announced survey,
special event, publicity and social
action committees.
The council is composed of rep
resentatives of the various reli
gious denominations and student
and faculty members.

Mrs. Brewer
Takes Union
Hostess Job
Mrs. Harlow Brewer was ap
pointed night hostess of the Union J
according to a release from the
Union board of managers meeting
Thursdny afternoon.
Mrs. Brewer is a graduate of
the university, a former editor of
the Awgwan, now extinct humor
magazine of the campus, and was
a member of Delta Gamma and
the student council.
Her duties will be to as.si.st the
director in chaperoning the build
ing and in cooperating with the
students on the activities program.

Initiates Eight
To Membership
Omlcron Nu, national home eco
nomics honorary, will initiate six
senior women and two faculty
members today. The eight new
members were chosen for scholar
ship, leadership, and showing
promise in the home economics
field. An 85 average is also re
quired. Aliene Selk, Evelyn Johnston.
Evelyn Schultz, Margaret Vosburg,
Helen Rhodes, Yuriko Maruyoma.
and Mildred Yost are the student
pledges. Miss Rowan Elliss and
Dr. Ruth Level ton are the two
faculty members pledged.
A seminar In speech pathology
designed for in service teachers is
being organized for the current
term at Wayne university, accord
ing to A. W. Bilto, acting director
of the speech clinic, who Btated
that major emphasis in the course
will be laid upon the problems in
volved in rehabilitation of soldiers
injured in the war.
