New Building
Creates Space
For Research
The new foods and nutrition
building on the ag campus, when
completed, will be an aid to help
ing Nebraskans with their knowl
edge of foods and better health
habits.
Standing just north of the home
economics building, the structure
will face east toward the mall
which is one of the most attrac
tive features of the campus. The
building is of the Georgian style
of architecture and will harmonize
well with the appearance of the
other buildings.
Three stories high and about
160 feet by 57 feet in size, the
building will have eight large pi
lasters as one of its distinctive
features. They will be of white
limestone. A light colored brick to
correspond with nearby buildings
is the main material for the out
side of the building, and the trim
is in white limestone. The roof
will be slate.
The main entrance will be on
the east side. On the first floor
will be a student lounge, about 22
by 35 feet in size, and a private
dining room where faculty, stu
dent and other groups may hold
dinner meetings. Student dining
clubs will make much use of a
large dining room. There will be
a soft drink fountain at one ena
of this dining room and adjoining
will be a tea room.
The large kitchen for the stu
dent cafeteria will be on the west
side of the building, with the serv
ice entrance on the west. Walk-in
refrigerators, an enclosed garbage
room, and an enclosed dishwash
ing room are features. The cafe
teria service counter will be sep
arated from the cafeteria dining
room. The large dining room win
be about 57 feet by 27 feet in size.
About one-half of the third floor
will be devoted to research in
foods and nutrition and advanced
work for students in dietetics.
There will be foods research and
faculty laboratories, a service lab
oratory with an analytical labora
tory adjoining, an experimental
laboratory, and offices for re
search workers and a dietetics
laboratory.
