If Monday's flashy victory over Missouri is indicative of the kind of ball the Huskers are going to play, chances are that Nebraska will be pretty close to the top of the heap when the shooting is all over. However, Iowa State with an impressive no: conference record and one conference victory, and K. U., with Magicman Phog Al len at the helm, stand out as pretty serious obstacles along the Big Six road. Cyclones Drop Missouri. In a slow-scoring game against the same Missouri team Nebraska rocked 51-45, the Cyclones were victorious bv a 34-25 decision, while Kansas tramped on a Tucker-less Oklahoma team to the tune of a 54-32 victory. Tucker, the center of one of the hottest conference basketball squabbles in many seasons, will be back in action Jan. 30, and with his return fans will have their first chance to see just how se rious a bid the Sooners plan to make in this season's conference wars. Sooners in Fourth Place. Coach Bruce Drake's cagers, after bowing to the Jayhawks in their opener, moved past K-State's Wildcats 47-40 to, land a fourth place in the league race to date. It was the best game that we have seen Ne braska exhibit during the last two seasons. . . The fan situation even took on a more healthy atmosphere. Poor Beginning After that first half we were a little disheartened. , . There was a record to keep up. . . If the Huskers had lost this cage tilt to the Tigers, it would have been the first time that we had seen the cagers fall this season. . . The reason is that were fortu nately missing from the non conference disasters. . . There were six losses that me missed out on. . . Since the conference season started, Nebraska has won their last two engage ments. . . What is that old adage? A poor beginning brings on a good ending. Fan Support Last night produced something besides a nerve-tickler of a basket. ball game. . . It showed that Ne braska students could exhibit spirit rather than a passive resist ance. . . After the Kansas State tilt, coaches, sports writers and school officials wondered how it their opener to Nebraska, and their second tilt to the Oklahom ans, to share the cellar with the Tigers. K. U. Here Saturday. Three games are left on tap this week, with K. U. traveling lo Columbia to do battle with Mis souri tonight and going on the road again Saturday to meet the Nebraska team on the coliseum floor. Only other league action will find the Sooners in Manhat tan against Kansas State. In the latter game, the "Allen- Branded" Oklahoma team, minus Tucker, will do battle on the ma triculating ace's old stamping grounds for the first time since the Sooner star's eligibility caused the big blow-up among Big Six dons. Iowa State will rest this week in preparation for their second conference clash, against Okla homa on Monday. Jj&lrww It r .CJ ill FOR ONE f W f Jll WEEK ONLY! Monday night proved what can be done. . . It takes more than just spontaneous outbursts to have real spirit but progress was shown. A Big Weekend The Huskers are staying at home this weekend giving the for mal couples a treat. . . The guests are Kansas and the date is Satur day evening. . . KU has one of the top teams in the conference and in the midwest. . . They are coached by Dr. Forrest 'Phog" Allen and consistently rank high in the cage world. . . The Jay hawks meet the Huskers on com mon ground. The Big Game The guests have proved them selves as powerful as ever in the early games. . . They won from Oklahoma by a 54-32 score in their first conference game and are due to meet Missouri tonight in their second tilt. . ; Barring an upset they should win this tilt and so will be coming up to Ne braska on even terms with the Huskers who have also won twice In Big Six firing. . . Saturday then will see the big game since Hooper Leads SAE to Water Polo Playoffs Jerry Hooper, 270 pound Sigma Alpha Epsilon gridman, swims with the speed of a Johnny Weis muller. Thnt sentiment was settled last night in the coliseum pool when Hooper led his Sig Alph mates lo an overwhelming 18-1 water polo victory over Alpha Sigma Phi. the conference season is one-third finished. And Now, Support This game will mean everything to the Huskers for if they win this engagement there is a good chance that the sophomoric team could fight on through to a conference cage championship. . . A feat that would demand notice in Ripley's "Believe It or Not". . . If they lose it will probably start a slump that will see the Nebraska squad near the cellar in final rankings. . . This is how important the game really is. Hooper not only led his mates he scored all 18 points! Phi Delts Cop. Charles Oldfather's 4 points sparked the Phi Delts to an 8-2 triumph over the ATO's in the other semi-final water fray. The Sig Alphs will meet the Phi Delts Thursday night for the water polo title. Badminton results last night found the Sig Alphs beating the Betas, 2-1, to march to the finals. The DU's will meet the Kappa Sigs tonight in the other semi-final fray to decide who will meet the Sig Alphs for the title.
