THILL
By Bob Miller
One look at the calendar on the
wall brings something home with
sufficient force not to be over
looked . . . That something is that
there will be only 23 more days
until Nebraska's opener with the
Cyclones of Iowa State on Octo
ber 24 . . . Out of these 23 days
subtract four Sundays and if my
arithmetic is the same as yours
that means 19 more days of prac
tice . . . True there will be six days
left which will be double-barrel
practices but that still isn't a very
long time in which to get a team
of partially inexperienced foot
ballers ready to go and to defend
the Big Six championship in true
Nebraska style . .
Let's take a look see into the
condition of the line in regard
to experience . . . The first line
stacks up well with George
Abel, guard, Clarence Herndon,
tackle, Freddie Meier, center,
Bob Ludwick and Fred Preston
having won their spurs In the
form of the block "N" for two
yean ... Vic Schleich will be
at tackle and he has one letter
to his credit, Herb VonGoetz is
the other starting choice, being
recruited from last year's scout
quad . . . The situation doesn't
seem too alarming but when
these boys leave the game their
positions will be taken by some
inexperienced player who may
be good basically but who would
be much better with a little col
lege playing time . . . There are
only two minor letter winners
and four squad members of last

year to take the first line's
place. . . Can they do it?
Behind the line, the backs are
beginning to shape up but here
is where the major bit of inex
perience comes in . . . The Vis
count Francis has two letters to
his credit while Dale Bradley
and Allen Zikmund have one
apiece . . Marvin Athey, the
sophomore back, is slated to
take his place with these three
and his college experience is nil
. , . The sports enthusiast can
remember last year's squad and
the two units that were prac
tically interchangeable, so close
ly matched were they In skill
and experience . . .
Weakness lies in reserves.
Those days are gone for this
year and at least cince the second
team cannot begin to duplicate
the experience of the first string
. . . Therein lies the weakness of
the 1941 team and while they look
good in practice it all boils down
to one veteran sport writer s com
ment, "They may look good on
the practice field but you can't
tell anything until you see thorn
against an opposing team. That's
when their experience comes
out." . . .
Grist . . . Vike Francis was a
busy man this summer . . . What

over town demanding his atten
tion and then getting married

even busier since getting mar
ried, this time it concerns wash
ing dishes and to top it off his
pretty wife drove him down to
the stadium track each night to
see that he took three laps and
finished with two round trips to
the top of the stadium . . .
Which all put together should
put him in good condition for a
big year . . .
Through the mail . . . Orv Mat
thews, Big Six 100 yard cham
pion, played a little joke that
backfired on him recently . . .
Knowing that his track coach was
in town visiting friends, Orv de
cided to disguise his voice and
pull a gag on John Jacobs, Sooner
track coach . . . Calling up nis
coach he asked in an unnatural
voice if Jacobs was in need of
sprinters at Norman and when he
got an affirmative reply, he said,
"I'm a sprinter, myself, but I'm
not in very good shape." . . .
Schucks!" laughed Jacobs,
don't let that worry you. I
found out last spring that a
good sprinter doesn't have to be
in shape. I've got a sprinter
named Orviile Matthews that
won the Big Six 100 yards and
he didn't get in condition all
year." . . . "Pardon me, coach,
this is Orviile Matthews," was
the sheepish rejoinder . . .
