V Tuesday, December 3, 1940 DAILY NEBRASKAN 11 Conquered European peoples defiant; near revolution Russell Wright "People in Poland, France, and other conquered European states in their hearts are very defiant about being subdued by the nazi regime and will revolt at the first opportunity," Russell Wright, rov ing news photographer, observed yesterday as he discussed life and conditions in war-torn Europe. "There will be starvation in Europe this winter," he declared, "but the Germans will eat. I be lieve the food shortage will occur in Norway, Denmark, the Balkans, and Poland. At the present France has a good store, but how long it will last or how far it will go de pends on how much the Germans take. Not only is there a proba bility of starving masses of Frenchmen, but they also have a very serious unemployment prob lem to solve. Since the Lorraine region has been declared German, the French have been forced to move into Poland or unoccupied France for their livelihood." Wright began tour last year. Wright r turned from Europe and the fascinating experiences of a news iccl photographer almost a year r.go, and has since spent his time lejturing in the United States showing his documentary movies of conditions resulting from World war II. A very young looking man, even though his hair is gray ing at the temples, .Wright has been in the journalism game for ten years. His specialty is the field of journalism pohtography, although he is equally efficient as a news writer, having done both jobs in Spain during the civil war. Wright has inevitablly arrived in cities destined to make history in advance of the crises to occur, and in time to get stories first when they break. He explaines his fore sight very logically. "I only en deavor to analyze the situation," he said, "because by a careful analyzation, one can usually fore cast events and the time and place for their occurence." As interesting experiences as could happen to any foreign cor respondent have probably hap pened to Wright. In Danzig, he was "taken for a ride by two black shirts" and imprisoned for 21 hours for taking pictures of mili tary activity. He has run into similar trouble in Austria and Ger many and in every city, "it is like sneaking into a fort past scores of guards to get to the place where I can take any meaningful shots," he affirmed. "As a rule, the news reels shown in American theaters are highly censored," he said, "but the extent of the censoring depends on the subject material and the camera man." According to Wright, it is essential for a camera man to ex cite no suspicion about his work and to make contacts with the right people. Although he has not been in England since Hitler began his bombardment of that country, BEAUTE SALON Have Your Hair RestyJed for the Military Ball-Dec. 6 507 Fed. Sec. Bldg. 5-6176 Buhl foundation has made a grant of $194,740 to the Univer sity of Pittsburgh for a five-year expanded program in social work training. Vassar college scientists believe the Indians in the Hudson river valley centuries ago had a mer chandizing and industrial system not unlike today's. . Wright prophesied that the morale of the British will not be weak ened. He thinks they "can take it." "The Greeks," this analytical reporter said, "depend a great deal on the British who are doing all aviation work of any significance for them. They do not have much equipment and their position for victory is questionable, but they arc putting up a good fight."
