Thursday, October 3, 1940 DAILY NEBRASKAN I )'XbumcL Br Jim Evinger Tonight, the Huskers leave for Minneapolis for a little argu ment with Minnesota's Golden Gophers. ... The Nebraska array of football talent will need all the moral support that is possible to gather. . . . That moral support will be lent by all loyal Cornhuskers who are in the midst of the huge rally planned to see the squad off for the Big Ten university. . . . WHERE'S OUR SUPPORT? In any kind of undertaking, one needs someone to lend support to fire enthusiasm and show that someone is "back there" pulling for you thru thick and thru thin. . . . The job of the student body tonight is to show . our Huskers Just how much we are backing them. . . . Not only must there be a huge delegation to see the team off for Minneapolis, but we must shout our loyalty to the high heavens. . . . Texas Tech issued a map showing where the Red Raiders have been traveling in their foot ball wars.... The inference is: "Come to Texas Tech and see America first". . .It's no longer the Big Ten.... IT'S HELPFUL. .' it's mm Huskers given light workout Wednesday On the eve of the last day in Lincoln before departing for Min nesota and the Gopher game on Saturday, Coach Biff Jones sent his varsity through a light work out yesterday. Dummy scrimmage and defense against Gopher plays were stressed in the workout Wednes day afternoon. More chalk talks were given by the coaches. The football sendoff rally starts at the Union at 6:15 tonight and the train pulls out from the Bur lington station at 7 p. m. Workout Friday. The squad will arrive in Min neapolis on Friday morning and will take a last workout in the Gopher stadium tomorrow. An early starting lineup would put Fred Preston and Roy Pro chaska at the ends, Royal Kahler and Game Captain Forrest Behm at the tackles, Eddie Schwartz kopf and Warren Alfson at the guards, Bob Burruss at center. Bus Knight at quarterback, Harry Hopp and Butch Luther at the halves, and Vike Francis at full back. There is a possibility that Fred Meier, junior letterman from Lin coln, may start at the first string pivot post in place of Burruss if the latter is not physically fit. Burruss has been troubled by a lame back. Frosli gridders end first squad game in 7-7 tie Coach A. J. Lewandowski sent his frosh charges thru the first scrimmage of the year yesterday afternoon on the freshman lot. The teams, the whites and the blues, battled to a 7-7 deadlock. Due to the lack of previous work together the running depart ment of each team was weak and as a result both scores were made via the air-lanes. Both teams put together several nice passing threats but each time the running attack bogged down and the points were not realized. M. Grubaugh scores. The White team made the most spectacular score as they covered some 60 yards on one play. Ray Long threw a 20 yard pass to Merle Grughbaugh who gathered the pigkin in to race some 40 vards down the sidelines to pav dirt. The university chapter of the College, Republican clubs will meet today at '5 p. m. in parlour X of the Union. a IEut THIS CHART? . . . Gophers rate Huskers on top Minnesota college paper claims themselves as 'underdogs' for Saturday By Jim Evinger. Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil. Huskers! Don't look now, but from the press notices in the MIN NESOTA DAILY, Gopher colle giate newspaper, you fellows are going to win that game on Sat urday. That's an unbelievable fact. They have made themselves the "underdogs." How do they figure that? The national sports writers are making the Gophers the fa vorites. Gophers rank sixth. In the rankiners of Dick Dunkel. noted sports expert, Minnesota is ranned in the upper ten top teams in the nation and the Gophers are rated sixth in the Azzi-Ratem system. Yet, in spite of all this, the Gophers rate themselves the "un derdogs." Here's what the Minne sota paper says: "And the Gophers play Ne braska Saturday. That well may be the first Minnesota loss of the season, because Nebraska, according to reports, has a real ball team this year. Biff Jones will be out to make it three out of four over Minnesota, and he is favored to do it." There, do you see what you are up against? That is all just a lot of built-up ballyhoo to install the old "college try" into the Gophers and to cut down on their over confidence. Just a little word of warning before closing. The DaDera nn there are full of how even the Minnesotans of 1940 compare with those on last year's team. You will be praised to the sky but only for your own downfall if you be lieve such press raves. Coach W. H. Browne told you just how good those Gophers are and he was not iokine-. Thev hav a very good chance to be unde feated in 1940. And they may do that if they can make themselves the "underdogs" in every grid bat tle this year. Seven battles played last nite I.M.
