William F. Boand, originator of
the Azzi Ratem football rating
system, developed his ranking of
pigskin teams over the nation
while he was an invalid and was
convalescing . . .
Now in business in Chicago, Mr.
Boand has his wife as his chief
aid . . . She keeps the records and
does much of the figuring and
even enjoys working out the
rankings . . .
When Bopnd first started his
system, he called it As I Rate
'Em, later shortened to Azzi
Ratem . . . Help in bettering his
ratings came from outstanding
coaches . . . Good old K n u t e
Rockne even lent a helping hand
. . . That was way back in 1930 . .
In eight years of national rank
ing, Nebraska has always ap
peared high In the final ratings
... In 1932, the Huskers stood
13th, '33, 4th; '34, 37th; '35, 14th;
'36, 5th; '37, 10th; '38, 57th, and
last year, 14th . . . Not bad stand
ings, eh, out of 100 teams listed
every year? . . .
Minnesota rates 7 points better
than Washington among games to

and Ohio State 13 points better
than Pittsburgh among other
games this week . . .
On Tuesday, Jimmy Foxx belted
out his 500th major league home
run ... He needs only 214 more
to match Babe Ruth's record . . .
Mark Larry French and Charley
Root, veterans of the Chicago
mound staff, as probable members
of the 200-victory circle in the
National league by the end of the
1941 season . . . Carl Hubbell and
Freddy Fitzsimmons just joined
the double-century set this year . .
When Rookie Dutch Meyer bat
ted in six runs in an exhibition
game last spring against the De
troit Tigers, he cut out a major
league job for himself . . . After
Charley Gehringer went lame, De
troit called Meyer from Knoxville
and he is one of the rookies of
the year . . .

most important major leaguers in
their respective loops . . . Bobby

Southern Cal
top team in
Pasadena play
Trojans have six Rose
Bowl wins; Pittsburgh,
Alabama lead visitors
Dipping into the record books
concerning Rose Bowl classics, it
is found that Southern California
has appeared in that New Year's
bowl six times and has won every
encounter.
Stanford has been host five
times but has only been triumph
ant twice. Alabama and. Pitts
burgh lead the visitors to the
Pasadena frolic with four appear
ances apiece.
In 1918 and 1919, there were
no colleges playing in the Rose
Bowl due to the World war. How
ever, service schools of the Navy
and the Marines were combatants.
Trojans swamp Pitt.
The largest score rolled up was
the Southern Cal wallop of Pitts
burgh in 1930 by a 47-14 count.
The next largest score was South
ern Cal's 35-0 shutout over the
Panthers in 1933.
No team from the Big Six has
ever been represented in the Rose
Bowl, but the Big Ten has seen
one of its elevens recognized. Ohio
State visited the Pasadena oval
in 1921 but lost to the Californic
Bears 28-0.
Oddly enough, three of the bat
tles have ended in ties. The
strangest game of the whole se
ries was the 1929 game in which
Georgia Tech nosed out California
8 to 7. But, that was the clash
in which Roy "Wrong Way" Rie
gals ran toward his own goal and
eventually set up the pins for a
safety on his team and finally a
win for the Tech Yellow Jackets.
Ohio State university student
fliers are making mass flights to
other colleges during weekends in
order to arouse interest in civilian
flying.
Of every 1,000 college graduates
who marry only 19 will be di
vorced, as compared with the gen
eral average of 164 divorces for
every 1,000 marriages.
