Socialites finding summer
air-conditioned inside n' out
By Yahudi'c Yahudi.
A break in the hot weather the
past weekend saw the Kampus
Kids attending dances rather than
the accustomed visits to bathing
beaches. . .The big talk of the
future is the coming of Glen
Miller on Tuesday and the plans
for the four-day holiday weekend
over the 4th . . .
DANCING '
at the Beach Friday night were
Betty Jackson, Theta, and Bob
Johnson, ATO; Dick Hitchcock,
Kappa Sig, and Marian Bowers, of
the Kappa Klan; AOPi Marion
Miller and Gayloid Jenkins. . .
MORE TRIPPING
of the light fantastic were th"
numerous couples at the Park on
Saturday night ... Marian Lowrey
of the Pi Phi house was wealing
Jack Moore's Sig Chi pin as she
danced, while Jack Beauchamp,
Phi Delt, was swinging around
with Dorothy Tyson. .. Engaged
Pauline Boyd, Kappa, and Jack
Christenson, Kappa Sig, were
doubledating with ex-Pep Queen
Janet Harris and Bill Davison...
AIR-CONDITIONING
in the theaters brought out mote
dates as Bette Rathburn, D G, was
taking in a cool afternoon on Sun
day with LeRoy Farmer... The
night before, the Rathburn gal
was dancing at the Park with a
Cincinnati recruit, Bob Bayer and
a Sig Chi. . .
CONSTANTLY
together are Eddie Muir and Mar
jorie Adams, a romance dating
back from high school days back
the Third City way. . .Another pair
enjoying the summer in unison are
Weesie Lefler, Theta, and Bill
Niehus, DU. . .
LETTERS (PERSONAL)
are continually finding their way
to Chi O Jean Carnahan from Phi
Delt Dick Hiatt, while the former
whiles away her time in summer
school and the latter his hours at
Troutdale. . .
after a fashion is this article
worthy of mention ? . . . It seems
that down on the Blue river, a DG
named Gay Gimple is a counselor
at a Camp Fire Gills' outing...
The deal is that the Grand Island
Guybird could be enticed to attend
Gln Miller on Tuesday ... Anyone
desiring further -particulars are
requested to direct inquiries to
aforementioned party at Milford
a hamlet some 20 miles south...
(The charge, Gay, will be taken
into consideration later!.. .
GOLFING
is the chief outdoor sport of the
greater half of the boys in sum
mer school... Chuck Pillsbury,
Beta. Frank Burdell, Phi Delt, and
Clyde Martz, DIT, are just a few
of the many who are digging up
the fairways more than frequently.

Overall . . .
Tax limitation involves state
oss, says Economist Schmidt
The overall tax limitation pro
posal to restrict property taxes to
seven mills in rural areas and 15
mills in city districts would bring
a loss to he state of 22 million
dollars and substitute taxes would
fall six million dollars short of
making up the difference, stated
E. B. Schmidt, instructor in eco
nomics, speaking before a summer

Boucher attends meet
Chancellor C. S. Boucher at
tended the national convention of
his college fraternity, Theta Delta
Chi, in Chicago Monday where he
spoke on "Colleges in Transition.-'
session administ i ative clinic on
taxation.
A net income tax would bring
in three to six million dollars, a
sales tax six to seven million, and
a gross income tax about eight
million, Mr. Schmidt said. But no
state has both a gross income and
sales tax, he explained, so that
maximum revenue from the best
combination would be about 14
million, with possibly two million
dollars more realized from intan
gible taxes.
Good Supplement.
A gross income tax might be
desirable as a supplement to the
property tax, he said, but one can
not compare possible results of
property tax limitation in Ne
braska with results shown in
other states since Nebraska land
has a much lower assessed value.
For this reason any limitation pro
posal should be scaled higher than
in other states rather than lower,
as is done in the present proposal.
Also discussing the taxation
question before the clinic was
Archer L. Burnham, secretary of
the Nebraska State Teachers asso
ciation, who pointed out that there
often is confusion over the term
"taxes" as implying only property
taxes In this state, they use only
a little over 21 percent of total
taxes, he said.
Nebraska ranks 40th from the
top in teachers' salaries, Mr. Burn
ham claimed, and 33rd from the
top in per capita cost based on
daily student attendance. In ef
forts to equalize educational op
portunity it ranks third from the
bottom.
