Fashion Footnotes
This thing called fashion . . .
So this is fashion edition day once ajrain. Midsomesters
and war may come and go but fashions, like football, are al
ways with us. And so is the gullible public. For fashions in
clothes, like fashions in politics and war, are arbitrarily set
by someone who has something to sell. And people are gullible,
as they always have been and probably
always will be. Sciaparelli decrees the
wasp waist and no doubt laughs up her
sleeve at the contortions little girls, big
girls, fat girls, and thin girls, will go
through to sqxieeze themselves into
hour-glass shapes. And what have they
when they get a waist that can be en
circled with one broad masculine hand,
especially when the feeling is that of
running up against a cast iron suit of
armor. It s enough to dismay any man!
Fashion is still 'spinach' . . .
A futile word and most misused is fashion. For commer
cial purposes, fashion denotes "the prevailing mode" which all
would-be best-dressers feel obligated to follow. And this, of
course, is when the would-be best-dresser ceases to be just that.
With gullibility in following fashion decrees comes the inevit
able standardization and the best-dresser fashion addict is lost
in the shuffle. So the actual best-dresser knows that fashion as
such does not exist, it is, in truth, "spinach,"
something to be stuffed down the throats of
unsuspecting victims because they think it's
good for them. And here we come to saddest
conclusion of all that fashion is the manner
in which one wears clothes and most people
haven't the individualism it takes to do just
that. Which leads us to a much more dis
tracting conclusion that without any clothes
at all, we might have less to worry about 1
When a fashion edition is not . . .
All you who read and heed such manner of articled advice
in this and all so-called fashion editions, remember, as you no
tice the amazing amount of advertis
ing in the issue, that fashion editions
are promoted primarily to exploit the
wares of the stores that sell you
clothes in this, and any, college town.
And if you, too, might think the
amount of advertising overshadows
the fashion advice columns, you can
put it down for certain that fashion
is such a good selling point that every
body wants to advertise in an issue
that's going to make the most of your
gullibility . . . and mine! But, of
course, someday, we'll put our heads together and make our
own fashions and stores won't be obliged to carry what some
far-distant fashion decreer decrees!
