Mortar Board
takes over
loan fund
Proposal to provide
students with ready
cash at no interest
EMiLlishment in the campus of
new Student Loan Fund has
been effected thru the cooperative
efforts of the Student Council,
Mortar Board, and unhersity of
ficials. Purpose of the action is to set
up a permanent fund to assist
Indents needing financial help for
t short period of time. No inter
est will be charged students secur
ing loans until the end of a five-month-period.
At that time loans
will be considered delinquent and
interest will begin at the rate of
live percent per annum.
No loans will be made in greater
amounts than fifty dollars. The
Dean of Student Affairs or such
persons as he may appoint will ad
minister the fund and make all
loans.
Mortar Board Contributes,
Members of Mortar Board be
came interested in the fund some
time ago when the Student Coun
cil first took it under considera
tion. They now propose to raise
money for it and will make a con
tribution of $100 to start it.
Mortar Board will solicit con
tributions to the fund from other
organizations and individuals.
They will contribute additional
sums of $100 each year until the
fund shall have reached $1,000
Contributions are now being ac
cepted on a voluntary basis. It is
specified that all contributors re
linquish all claim to the money
which they donate once it has be
come part of the fund.
Begins at Once.
Money will be held in the office
of the finance secretary and all
contributions to or withdrawals
from the fund must pass thru this
office. Collection of all loans will
filso be made thru this office.
The Mortar Board committee
which has made arrangements for
the fund is composed of Barbara
Rosewater, chairman, Betty Cle
ments and Phyllis Chamberlain.
The Student Council committee
was comprised of Frances Platte,
chairman, Dick McGinnis, and
Jean Morgan.
Moilar Boards will deposit the
first $100 of the fund after their
next meeting and the plans is ex
pected to get under way almost
immediately.

Director advises course
to present fine artists
"Music for every student and
every student for music" should
bo a slogan on every college and
university campus, says Howard
Kirkpatrick, director of the school
of music, in his article appearing
in the current issue of the Educa
tional Music Magazine.
Musical courses should offer
broad cultural as well ns profes
sional training, he believes, say
ing, "By all means, let us have a
distinguished music faculty ready
for the best talent that may apply
for instruction, and a group of
orchestra and choir ensembles for
every class and division of talent."
An artist's course which would
present great artists and orches
tras to the student body should bo
inaugurated in all universities, be
lieves Kirkpatrick, adding that
these concerts would be even
more valuable if they were pre
ceded by non-technical discus
sions of the music to be pre
sented. "In this manner," he explains,
"an easy and painless bath of cul
ture could be initiated. Most
campus activities provide a
plethora of singing and playing,
supported by inadequate program
annotations. This system is a
weak and somewhat futile method
of bringing music culture to the
students.
"Who is there to say that music
culture and professionalism can
not thrive on the same campus?
