No Countenance
Reveals Crime,
Says Thornton
By looking at a criminal's photo
graph, is it possible to tell what
type of crime he has committed?
To most people, distinguishing be
tween a murderer, a swindler, or
a second story man by studying
his picture is impossible. G. R.
Thornton, assistant instructor in
the department of psychology, ad
dressing a recent psychologival
convention, declared that the
guesses of college students in at
tempting to identify crimes with
photographs of criminals is only
slightly better than chance expec
tations. Mr. Thornton told the group of
recently conducted investigations
which suggest additional problems
for further research. If it is pos
sible to tell what type of crime a
man has committed by studying
his picture, is it possible to in
crease that ability by training?
Would there be individual differ
ences in this type of ability?
Test 65 Students.
To obtain the preliminary data
Mr. Thornton analyzed results
from a series of tests with 65 stu
dents. Pictures of criminals who
had committed several different
crimes, were shown on the screen.
Opposite each picture were listed
four crimes. Each student was
asked to underline the crime he
believed the individual in the pic
ture had committed. The instruc
tor then determined the number
of correct judgments, all possible
prejudicial factors being elimi
nated so that the correct answers
could be attributed only to the
Influence of the photographs.
Mr. Thornton's interest in this
problem was chiefly in developing
a method of testing the student's
ability to judge crimes after rul
ing out all possible sources of
error.
