braska fraternities met in emergency ses
sion Wednesday noon to prepare a protest to
methods employed by a local morning news
paper in securing and publishing partial lists of
new fraternity pledges before their approval
and release by the Interfraternity council.
An Interfraternity council rule provides a
fine for any fraternity releasing pledge lists
other than through the Interfraternity council.
As a consequence, some twelve houses who un
wittingly were induced to divulge names of
their new members, stand in line to be penal

able that the ordinarily stiff fine will be re
duced to a nominal sum In view of the despica
ble methods of which the chapters were vic
tims. Violation of this particular interfraternil y
rule is not a matter for great alarm. No pro
found disturbance will rock the cai.'pus as a
result nor will the fraternity system structure
be in any wise weakened. The disgusting and
regrettable part of the whole incident is that
a newspaper can let its thirst for news permit
its regard for fair play to sink to such a low
level, especially when its staff knew that the
informants would be subject to fine if the lists
were published.
The profession of journalism, because of
its position as a quasi-public utility, has been
confronted by more than its share of problems
in framing a code of ethics. Nevertheless, a
high standard of professional conduct for jour
nalism was set forth when the canons of the
American Society of Newspaper Editors were
formulated and adopted. These canons, to
which all institutions which profess to call
themselves newspapers are supposed to adhere,
include among other provisions, those for sin
cerity, fair play, and decency.
Certainly the tactics exhibited Tuesday
evening when the newspaper in question, by
dint of much clever scheming and planning,
succeeded in leading the twelve unfortunate
and unsuspecting fraternities to reveal their
pledges, is nothing but open and deliberate
deviation from the high standards which arc
supposed to govern its activities.
Had the incident been a news story of im
mense importance perhaps more than usual
effort 1o scoop rivals would have been in or
der. Hut on a story of comparatively minor
value for which a release date set to accom
modate all interested newspapers had been ar
ranged, the procedure reeks of meanness.
The campus may or may not soon forget
this perhaps unimportant matter. Twelve fra
ternities will pay their fines, vow that the
newspaper is at times a vicious institution, and
remember long in the future to guard each new
pledge list more closely from prying and sinis
ter eyes. But, it hurts to be taken for a ride.

Intramural Program
Under Way.
Elizabeth Bushee, president of
the W. A. A. Council, has called a
meeting of the intramural repre
sentatives from the organized
houses at noon Monday, Sept. 23,
in room 101, Grant Memorial, and
a meeting of the Sports' Board
Wednesday noon in room 101. At
these two meetings Miss Bushee
says she hopes to get the W. A. A.
intramural program started. First
of the competitive sports this year
will be soccer-baseball, she an
nounced. Ruth Fulton, In charge of the
soccer-baseball tourney, has re
quested that representatives from
all the organized houses be pres
ent at the meeting Monday noon.

the rspertorial staff of the

at the Nebraskan office after
2 o'clock on Thursday or Fri
day afternoon. Beats will be
assigned during the next
month to those who have
showed the greatest interest
and diligence in the work.
