CHARLEY
BLACK
AND SQUAD GET
TO
DUN
IRK
Team Promises to Be One
Of Strongest for
Years.
OPENING TILT DEC. 19
Less Than Three Weeks Left
Before Pittsburgh Game
in Lincoln.
Coach Charley Black and his
basketball squad settled down to
real work Monday night in their
preparations for the coming sea
won. George Koster, Steve Hokuf
and McPherson were some of the
new men to report to Black for
their first workout last night and
the first two mentioned are con
sidered to be the strongest of the
guard candidates.
Hokuf played at guard position
a large part of the time last year
but did not wor kout with the
squad Monday night. He Intends to
rest, for a few days and let his
legs build up again after the stren
uous football season.
Promise of Strength.
The squad this year gives prom
ise of being one of the strongest
to represent Nebraska on the hard
wood floor for several seasons.
Fisher, Maclay, Davcy and Hokuf
are the returning veterans and the
men around whom Charley Black
will mould hi3 team. All four of
the returning veterans, have
worked together for an entire
year and will form a nucleus
around which a strong team can
be built.
The basketeers have less than
three weeks to get in shape for
the opening game of the indoor
season with Pittsburgh here Dec.
19. Immediately after this game
the squad will leave for an inva
sion of the western coast when they
play the University of Washing
ton In Seattle, Dec. 27, 29 and 30.
Monday night Black confined
most ot the workout to passing
and engaged in no actual scrim
mage. Offensive plays were ironed
out and the men went through
some dummy scrimmage. Later in
the week the men will get their
first taste of scrimmage and an
attempt will probably be made to
assemble workable lineup.

I'ING FOOTBALL has folded up
his tent and stolen away into
the night but the memory lingers
on. This memory is taking the form
of a wholesale selection of "All"
teams. Far be it from the humble
writer of this column to attempt
to select an "All" team of any type
or description it isn't safe!
But while we are on the subject,
Rhea, Broadstone. Greenberg and
Hokuf are receiving quite a bit of
praise and many authorities are
rating them on their teams. Ne
braska's linemen have rather
taken the spotlight away from the
backfield this year and they con
tinue to do so in the selection of
Big Six teams. Buster Long and
Young are receiving some mention
but it is only on the second and
third teams.
VfITH the passing of football,
W basketball has advanced to
take its place In the center of the
stage. Coach Charley Black has
lost no time and each afternoon
has his scantily clad basket tossers
going through their paces in the
coliseum.
Nebraska's chance for a winning
team this year are looking bright
with Maclay, Hokuf, Davey and
Fisher back to play. Fisher laid
out of football this year, deciding
to devote his entire attention to the
hoop tossing game.
An added inducement to the
basketball men will be the trip to
Seattle. Wash., during the Christ
mas recess when the University of
Washington will be encountered.
Although practice has just started,
this trip and the game with Pitts
burgh here Deo. 19 ia caucing
quite a flurry as there is less than
three weeks to prepare for this
first game.
VIOT long ago a columnist was
shot and killed in Chicago. Po
lice, after a lengthy investigation,
stated that he had been shot be
cause he "knew too much."
It is a mystery how any column
ist could be shot for "knowing too
much." The general criticism
seems to be that the men writing
these space fillers are blundering,
blithering idiots and should all be
killed.
And the terrible thing about it
all is that the people are always
right.
NTOW that football is all gone,
' there may be a little doubt as
to the title of this column. We
have decided that it would be
much easier to merely move the
bench over to the coliseum and
keep it warm over there than it
would be to construct a new cut to
place at the top of this nonsense.
We will not attempt to move the
stadium in the background, of
course, as it would be too much of

a job and would hardly be worth
the trouble. It will he much nicer
to merely pretend that the stadium

the people on the bleachers over at

So, if you just use your imagina

to change the name and we can all
be happy.
INTRAMURAL sports will go into
full swing this week, starting
Thuisday night when the first
round of the basketball tournament
will get under way. This is done,
according to Rudy Vogeler, to get
a number of the games out of the

Class A, class B and professional
fraternity leagues have been
formed and the play will go on as

Embryo Coaches' Squad by
Victory Over Western
Tigers Takes Title.
By defeating Vic Scherzinger's
Western Tigers in the final game
of the season by n score of 7-0,
Maurice "Mud" Gardner's coaching
class team won the championship
of the freshman football league.
Gardner's team had a record of
four victories, no defeats and two
ties.
The freshman squad is divided
into lour teams after the regular
frnsh vnisitv bus been chosen at
the beginning of the year. These
four teams play a rouna ruimi
schedule of games to determine the
rhnmninn. In this manner those
boys who are not skilled enough to
make the frosh varsity are given
an opportunity to participate in
gamca1. .
Players who showed up excep
tionally well on the championship
team were Bailor, quarterback;
Chase, fullback; Rowan and Green,
guards; Colby, center; and Nelson,
end. These boys were outstanding
in every game and a great deal of
the credit for the championship
can go to them.
Scherzinger's Western Tigers
and Kahrney's agricultural college
team tied for second place in the
league with two victories, three de.
feats and one tie. Coach Knight's
agricultural college team number
two placed fourth and last in the
standings with one game won,
three lost and two tied.
The race was close throughout
the entire season and all the play
ers turned out well for the games.
Although a few spectators at
tended the games the teams
showed plenty of fight and some
excellent football was displayed
during the season. All of the
roaches of trie tpams Ik.vp had ex
perience in athletics. Gardner is a
former Nebraska track man and
present holder of the Big'Six rec
ord in the half mile. Scherzinger
was a member of the varsity foot
ball squad last year.
William C. Gregg, former stu
dent at the university, has given a
group of etching to the art collec
tion of the school of fine arts. Mr.
Gregg, who is the owner of a rail
way equipment factory at Loai,
N. J., has given a number of paint
ings to the university's collection.

the Big Six conference this rail,

outstanding star. Captain Putnam,
a protege of Bob Simpson, former
Missouri track star and holder of
numerous hurdling records, ran
five races this fall to average
9:40.3 for each two mile race. Put

which his mentor practiced his
way to fame, has been bettered by
only three college men.

Putnam's recent mark betters
the best time made previously for
the distance by a Big Six or Mis

Iowa State , ran the distance In

his own eonfeience record of

the face of these achievements that
the Iowa State captain will be one
American representative in the
