jump,
Tomton Only First.
Cube Tomson, the only Husker
lo take a first, with the exception
of Bill Ossian. who tied for one.
broke his own record in the broad
jump, getting out 24 feet, 2 1-4
inches. Ossian was forced to share
honors in the pole vault with Jim
Bausch. when neither of thi men
could clear the bar at 13 feet, 2
inches, after having cleared it at
13 feet even.
Ostergard and Lamson. sched
uled to do big things in the half
and the hurdles respectively, had
a bad day. The big blonde from
Gothenburg became too interested
in Rocky Swartz while he was run
ning the naif, and both men
burned themselves out before they
entered the stretch. Hinshaw,
Kansas 8S0 man. sneaked up from
behind to win the event.
Lamson dldn"t get over the high
sticks so slow, even though he fin
ished second. He forced Soults of
Iowa State to a new record of 14
o-lO seconds, which is within a
tenth of a second of the world's
mark. He failed to place in the
lows.
Thornhill Sets Discus Mark.
Jim Bausch's new mark in the
shot was 49 feet, 10 1-2 inches.
Thornhill. & team mate, sailed the
discus a matter of some 155 feet,
11 inches, lo aet another lecord.
Missouri placed three men in
order in the 440 yard dash, with
Dill leading the pack to the tape
with a new record of 48 6-10 sec
onds. Welch of Missouri also pot
into the afternoon's pastime of the
record smashing when he turned
in a time of 23 3-10 seconds for
the low hurdles.
rutnam. Iowa distance man who
was looked to for a couple of new
marks during the afternoon, had
some tough luck in the mile,
throwing a shoe and turnijg an
ankle on the first turn. His shoes
stayed on during the two mile,
however, and he finished the grind
ia 9 minutes, 30 2-10 seconds for
another record.
Former Husker Coaches Soults.
An interesting coincidence of
one of the performances was in
the fact that Soults. who set a new
high hurdles record, is a protege
of Bob Simpson, former Missouri
athlete and former holder of the
tecord.
Nebraska's points in the high
hurdles were the results of a sec
ond and a fifth, contributed by
I-amson and White. Smutny came
through with a fifth in the hun
dred, and a fourth in the 220, while
Eller got a fifth in the latter
event. The 440 points were gar
nered by Fuhlrodt, who finished
fourth, and by Currier, who fin
ished fifth.
