LcRossignol Comments on Hertzler's
Xcw Textbook, 'Social Institutions'
Cditors Note: J. O. Hertzler,
chairman of the sociology de
partment recently wrote a tixt
hook, "Social Institutions."
Folio wing is a review of
the work by Professor J. E. Le
Rossignol. dean of the college of
business administration.
Wc often speak with reverence
n our time honored institutions
and of our duty to transmit tbcm
unimpsired, if not unchanged, to
posterity, but we have not read
Trof. j. O. Hertzler's new and
iimely book. 'Social Institutions."
published by the McGraw-Hill
company, we may not even know
il should be treated with respect.
Here is Hertzler's definition: "A
social institution is a complex of
concepts and attitudes regarding
the ordering of a particular class
of unavoidable or inde.spensable
human relationships that are in
volvcd in satisfying certain ele
mental individual wants, certain
compelling social needs, or other
eminently desirable social ends.

sider a partial list of social in
stitutions and institutional pro
ducts. Such are marriage, the
family, inheritance, government,
law, trial by jury, courts, the po
lice ,tbe army, property, contract,
money, banks, tranportation, labor
unions, markets, slavery, religions,
c h u r ches, schools, languages,
games, the fine arts, and societies
of every' kind.
One wonders whether such di
versity can be covered by any def
inition, however compbrensive, but
it cannot be denied that all of
these institutions, and many oth
ers, are intrenched in social life
by so strong a complex of thought,
feeling, and habitual action, that
they tend to continue Indefinitely,
even when their usefulness is gone.
All institutions have developed in
the past, in response to conditions
obtaining in those days, so they
are all more or less out of date
and should be adapted to new con'
dltions as they arise.
Danger In Deep Rooted Habit.
However, as Frofessor Hertzler
admits, there Is danger here. In
stitutions are deeply rooted, and
cannot be plucked up without dis
turbing the whole social structure
in which they are imbedded and
i n t w ined. Extreme radicalism,
therefore, stands condemned as
threatening to destroy the whole
social structure, without any as
surance that a new and better
order can be built upon the ruins
of the old.
Yet even moderate forward
looking progressives may be mis
taken in their dagnosis of social
mal-adjustments, and in the rem
idies which they prescribe. The
a 1 1 u a tion, therefore, demands
much study of social avntomy and
physiology and almost super-human
wisdom on the part of those
who would abolish long established
institutions or Adapt them to the
changing times.
Professor Hertzler makes no
claim to infallibility, yet his in
teresting and suggestive book
throws light on many dark places
and might well be read by all
who wlah to know in what direc
tion progress lies and how to
profit by scientific research and
the experience of previous gener
ation, for which they have paid
so great a price: ,
IDEAL STUDENTS HAVE
AMBITION.
TKXAS CHRISTIAN UNIVER
SITY, Fort Worth -The ideal stu
dent, according to Dean Hall here,
is the one whose curiosity to learn
and industry io adapting himself
to live, carry him into creative ac
tivity far beyond the requirements
of any given corrse or any pre
scribed degree.
However, the dean believes that
"even a 'flapper' " derives much
benefit from college life, in rpitc
of her "flapping." A small per
centage of them derive so little
benefit that it is questionable
whether or not it is worth the
cost. But many beautiful and
happy looking girls are often
casually ranked as flappers when
they do not deserve the imputa
tion of vacuity which this term
implies."
WILL MEETS EQUAL. ,
NEW YORK Will Rogers, who
prides himself on being consider
able of a conversationalist, met
his match when he called on
George Bernard Shaw, he said to
day on his return from Europe
aboard the Ile de France.
"I said 'How do you do. Mr.
Shaw' and some time later "Good

the rest of the conversation."
He will stay in New York for
a week, Rogers said, and then go
