Patrons of the school district will be Informed of the rindings at a public meeting prob ably next week. In general, conditions in the York schools are very satisfactory. "There would be fewer failures in tbe freshman year if all university students could have come from schools as excellent as York," one of the members of the survey staff reported. Favorable as the situa tion is 1n certain particulars, bow ever, a number of Important recom mendations, based on the findings of the survey staff, wereoffered. An expenditure of $200,000 in the near future for the expansion of high school facilities was one of the proposals made. This recom mendation was based upon an an alysis of York's present educational need and those due to the prob able growth of the -city during the next fifteen years. It was estimated that tbe popula tion of York will likely increase as mnch as 1,000 by 396. There will probably be an increase In school on roll meat of about twenty a year. All factors considered, a six-year combination junior-senior high school was recommended. Girls 'Have Good Record Failure and acceleration received considerable attention. In every high school subject except mathe matics there were more failures among tbe boys than the girls Even in science, in which a boy ordinarily excels, seven times as many boys as girls failed. Sugges tions were made which will guar antee the boys a square deal. Tbe whole matter of retardation and ac celeration was given close atten tion. Other tpurpoees were: To learn whether the superintendent and his helpers were properly performln, thelr supervisory duties and wbe- V"r tbe school program is organ ised as it should be: to study tbe achievements or the boys and girls attending the elementary and high schools; to investigate finances of York school district; ard to on sidnr courses taught in high school. Particular mpbasis was placed 1n the necessity of offering a better program of guidance to tbe high school students. Children of York were found to be much more intelligent than the average for tbe country as a whole. This indicates a very blgb type of citizenship in York, according to Dr. Charles Portfyce.
