Nebraska Typewriter Co. 1232 O SL B-2157 IN THE VALLEY By JACK ELLIOTT Certainly a good thing for Ne braska that Coach Bears; doesn't have to build a new football team next season, that is, an entire new eleven. The mojuls in the Big Six hare cut the spring football session to fifteen days and with the few weeks in the fall, football mentor in the Big Six next fall will have to whip a gridiron aggregation together in short notice. Last spring Bearg had six weeks of training for his gridiron warriors and by the time school opened in the fall he was pretty sure of what ma terial he had for his team. The first game on the Husker schedule comes early in October with Iowa State. It is considered a championship game and the 1928 Cornhuskers will have to step on it. Even at that Nebraska is not near ly as hard hit as two of its sister members in the Big Six, Kansas and Kansas Aggies. These two schools are starting out next season with new football coaches. The players will have to learn their new mentor's sys tem of coaching and in all probabil ity an entirely new one. Kansas will have "Big Bill" Hargiss and as yet the Aggie school has not selected a man to fill Bachman's vacancy. Football players will marry. Herb Joesting, Minnesota's All-American back for two seasons and his class mate sweetheart, Miss Lora Davidson of Minneapolis were married last Tuesday and Herb will take his bride with him to San Francisco for the benefit game there December 26. Herb and Presnell will work together at the backfield positions on the All Eastern eleven. The smoke down on the Kaw has just about blown away now and things are back to normal. Merch ants were found guilty of betting and sending scouts to Missouri and the athletic board at the university has decided that they can't let "Phog" Allen leave his post as basketball coach. There was much talk that Al len be relieved of his coaching posi tion so he could give his undivided time as director of athletic but the athletic board of control says "Phog" shall handle both. Coach "Chick" Meehan has decided to remain with the New York Violets next season according to the New York American. Meehan has signed a contract at the New York school for three years at $15,000 a season.; Meehan had four demands from New , York university and they are as fol-' lows: That he have a voice in sched-' uling games; better co-operation! from the authorities; biger salary;' and the right to name his coaching staff. Scores of the other two Missouri Valley games played Saturday night include a win for the Oklahoma Sooners over Grinnell by a score of, 44 to 16. Drake took a close con test from the Oklahoma A. and M. (institution, 37 to 33. These scores place Oklahoma in the lead with two victories, and Kan sas Aggies and Washington follow ing with one victory apiece and clean slates for their first encounters. Speuring, brilliant sophomore cen ter of the Tiger quintet, got in the game for a scant two minutes of ac tion. He soon received 'a serious ankle injury and had to be replaced. i Nebraska has no more games un til after the Christmas vacation when they engage Missouri and Washington on January 7 and 9 at the Coliseum. In the Friday night encounter, the Huskers lost a hard fought battle to the Washington Bears by a single point. Finishing the first half on the long end of a 11 to 9 score, the Ne braska cagemen were unable to stop Washington's shifty forward, Wien- ! tge, and lost the initial tussle of the season, 27 to 28. j Kenny Othmer led the scoring for ithe Scarlet and Cream lads with a total of seven markers. Five free throws and a basket were marked up to his credit during the game, while Glen Munn sank three baskets for six points and second honors for the Varsity men. Brown Trys For Free Throw "Jug" Brown made a single bas ket but had a chance to tie the score during the last half minute of play. His effort at a free throw rolled off the hoop, however, and the game ended with no farther scoring by either quintet. Forward Wientge possessed such an accurate eye for the hoop that he sank his shots from all angles and led in individual scoring with his point total of ten. Wientge was es pecially good at the high arch type of shot and rang up his total with four baskets and two free tosses. Kansas Aggies Defeat Kansas Other Valley games resulted in wins for Kansas Aggies, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma Aggies. The big upset of the evening was the win by Kan sas Ags over Kansas, 20 to 13. Bur ton, Hauser, and Schmidt of the Kansas quintet were held down by the hard working Aggies who in turn scored eight baskets and four foul throws for their twenty markers. Oklahoma Sooners defeated the Drake basketeers at Norman, 42 to 24, and showed an efficient brand of the basket art. Grinnell suffered a set-back in a heavy scoring argument with the Oklahoma A. & M. at Still water Friday evening. The final re sult was 54 to 43 in favor of the Stillwater farmers.
