Disqualifies Cfcief for Any

"Chief" Elldna, in whom Ne
braska had placed hopes this year for
performance on the gridiron, has
been declared ineligible for Varsity
competition, according to state
ment made yesterday by Dean T. J.
Thompson.
The announcement came as the re
sult of the decision reached by the
Conference committee on eligibility,
consisting of Dean S. W. Beyer,
Iowa State College, Dean H. W.
Arant, University of Kansas, and
Professor W. E. McConrt, Washing
tou University at St. Louis.
Elkins has had too much inter
collegiate competition to participate
for Nebraska this year, the commit
tee decided. He1 had two years of
competition with the Haskell Indians,
one year with South-Eastei-n Okla
homa Teachera college, Dnrant,
Oklahoma, and one year with Dallas
University, Dallas, Texas. The main
point of contention in considering
Elkins' eligibility was whether or not
his years with the Haskell Indians
should count.
Since Elkins' performance on the
freshman squad last year, Nebraska
has been counting on him for this
season. Elkins is an all-round ath
lete, as was Bhown last summer at
the A. A. U. meet in Lincoln when
he won the decathalon championship
of the United States. .

HARRIER TRY-OPTS
Noses Out Captain Johason in First
Time Trials of Year Held
On Stadium Track
Norris Chadderdon nosed out Glen
Johnson, varsity captain, in the first
regular cross-country try-outs of the
teason Thursday afternoon. Due to
the muddy condition of the course,
Coach Schulte sent his harriers
through a four-mile trial on the
stadium outdoor track.
Chadderdon took the lead from the
start, setting a good pace nrith an
easy stride. Johnson lagged as far
as twenty yards behind him at times
but picked up to finish 8-10 second
behind the University Place runner.

"Choppy" Rhodes' freshmen spent
the Thursday pigskin session on the
drill field as usual, perfecting a few
choice plays. Slippery footinjr slowed
up the exercise considerably, and at
the end of the practice, most of the
fellows were covered with mud.

linemen's time. Under the direction
of Coach Lehman, they mudded after
the shifty backs and found. lots of
difficulty in holding them.
Four complete teams were running
signals during the session, keeping
the coaches on the run shouting in
structions. A team C" will meet
the Teachers College High eleven in
a short tussle sometime later this
week.
Wittwer, guard, has been showing
a defensive ability of high merit,
Against the Varsity, he is especially
good at repulsing line bucks. Witt
wer comes from Neligh, and weighs
over 200 pounds. He possesses a
nice build for a lineman and uses
it to good advantage.
A new tackle was used on the right
side of the line Thursday afternoon.
His name is Elliott and he hails from
West Point He fitted in very well
on the tackle position, and looks like
a coming regular.
The lineup used Thursday:
Fisher and Roland, ends.
Elliott and Gilbert, tackles.
